The United States has gone through many changes. During this time, it will go through many more. People standing up for what they believe in will help push what the demand. When some groups get what they wanted it pushes others to push for what they what. This creates a country of citizens demanding changes n the United States. Changes will be made to make this country stronger.
In the 1950s the United States economy was doing well. The war is over and the increase in electronics like the tv helps drive the economy. The people of the country were still segregated. Communities were still separated as well as schools. Children were separated by race to determine which schools they went to. There was even a supreme court case discussing this. The Brown vs Board of Topeka, Kansas was a case regarding an African American not being allowed into a school and had to travel further to get to his school. The court ruled that schools and other public facilities being separated was not equal. They ruled that the state, local, and federal government cannot practice segregation. While the law said schools could not be segregated some schools didn’t listen. The governor of Alabama did not want to desegregate. The governor has the Alabama military come in and physically block kids trying to desegregate. This becomes known as the Little Rock Crisis. Eisenhower responded to this by bringing in the Army and forcing this school to allow African Americans to enroll. This led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act. As said in the 31st reading the event that took off this movement was the Stonewall Inn. It was a local spot from the gays. When raided by the police they fought back to keep the one place they had. This was the beginning of the Gay Liberation movement. As the United States moved on from civil rights to the Vietnam wars came many protests. Several people opposed the war and protested. They felt as if they were being ide to about the status of the war. When a series of documents fell in the hands f a journalist they were published. Nixon takes the matter to court because he believes they cannot publish it. The court rules a freedom of press allows it. People see them and see what is really happening and get worried. They feel as if they cannot trust the government. As we move through and the war is over people start to go back towards trusting the government.
Throughout these few years there has been several movements. African Americans can no longer be segregated in public or private businesses. This has encouraged others like the woman and the gay liberation movements start pushing for more rights. The United States is making the changes for they better.
