1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S
First appearing in 1961 as a unibody compact car, the Cutlass S soon became a formidable mid-sized car for anyone looking for a vehicle filled with options and ranges of performance upgrades. Beginning in 1968, the second generation of Cutlasses were born. This generation had a shortened wheel base and larger motors in comparison of its predecessors. In 1969, only one year into the second generation, the cars were changed yet again. These models received a minor face lift, rolling off the line with the tell-tale split grill and vertical tail lights (Worsham). Head rests became a standard option, the ignition modules were mounted on the steering column and no longer on the dash, and a new 3-speed GM 350 Hydra-Matic Turbo transmission was an option to replace the obsolete Jetaway 2-speed automatic (THM 350). The cutlass remained a hot car for many years to come, and by 1976, was America’s bestselling car (Donaldson). Purchased new in 1970 by my grandparents, a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Fastback 2 door hardtop resides in the dark corner of a barn covered in 30 years’ worth of dust, grime, and feces from the inhabitants it has presented a home for over the last 3 decades. It was purchased a family car, as well as a daily driver to and from work. It rolled off the line from the factory with a turquoise vinyl interior, bucket seats, a center console, head rests, as well as air conditioning and other accessories. Many stories have been told from the adventures endeavored from behind the driver’s seat of the car. Now however, its two tone Cameo White body, and Glade green hardtop remain to be covered in dirt and paw prints. The cutlass’ heartbeat is a 250 horsepower “Rocket” 350 V8 Chevrolet small block motor, producing 355 lbs. of torque at 2600 Revolutions per Minute (RPM), with a compression ratio of 9:1 (Oldsmobile Informational). It is naturally aspirated with a two barrel
