In George Orwell’s novel, “1984”, the people of Oceania have absolutely no freedom because of the powerful government. If the citizens even look like they are thinking something negative about the government or if it looks like they don’t agree with something they are immediately taken and never seen again. The ministry’s enforced the rules since there were no laws. “He tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always been quite like this…But it was no use, he could not remember: nothing remained of his childhood except a series of bright-lit tableaux, occurring against no background and mostly unintelligible”(3). They cannot love someone or even like someone as a friend; no emotion was allowed “No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the party. It was apolitical act”(Orwell 126). They cannot marry the person they like or have a child with them. “When you make love you’re using up energy; and afterwards you feel happy and don’t give a damn for anything.
