Romance is obsolete in a totalitarian society. It only exists if the government allows it. Today, love is built off internet dating, which is similar to having the government telling someone who to date. Romance just doesn't exist all feelings are kept hidden. No one noticed anyone; basing love on similarities. People see people “who don’t belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you, were against them” (122). Winston noticed Julia, and they couldn’t keep their feelings hidden. They were in love, but barely anyone was ever in love. True love is rare today; everyone is getting divorced and having trouble finding love. Acts of love are uncommon in society. Crimes …show more content…
against love are becoming more common. People are obsessed with others and “ hated the sight of you,’ he said. ‘I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterward” (120). Winston didn't even think about love. He was brainwashed and didn't even know what falling in love was like because false ideas filled his mind. People today are jealous of the fact of how many partners a person has had and according to Winston “Listen. The more men you’ve had, I love you” (125). Julia has been with a lot me and Winston is jealous of her. It also helped him justify the fact that he was breaking the law.
Love does not exist today, but besides that secrecy is obsolete.
Privacy doesn't exist in 1984 or today. Spying fills life, and no one is ever alone. Privacy is outdated, and people can't find “where they could be alone” from the world (Orwell 144). Winston doesn't have privacy no one does. The party watches everyone. Life today is surveillance, whether by a job or the FBI. People are either always on their phones or computers. A voice is always talking whether it's a game or video. It may take a break, and the telescreen is paused”, but when it comes back on it is clear and beautiful, floated into the stagnant air…” (25). Winston cannot shut off the telescreen, like how a screen is always on today. Private thoughts barely exist. People always post their thoughts on social media. Once someone knows a secret “thoughtcrime IS death”(28) Winston's thoughts were shared, like how today people share their thoughts on social
media. Social media is like the ideal world, but then a person realizes that real life is much different. The ideal world is the dream, but “...there was a “real” world were “real” things happened. But how could there be such a world?” (278). The real world is so much harsher. There is a better world except it would be impossible. The government, however, has an ideal world, and the trick people and leave their “ thoughts” to “wander again. Almost unconsciously he traced with his finger and the dust on the table: 2 + 2 = 5” (290). Winston's mind became so corrupted by political pursuit. It's similar to how today, people believe anything they hear. Winston believes what the party tells him like people believe what the internet tells them.
George Orwell uses his book 1984 to warn readers of the effects of a totalitarian society. He writes how it might happen. His greatest fear has turned into reality. He warned the fact that romance is disappearing, there are no secrets and ideal life vs. real life. Even though not all the events in 1984 happened or play a role in today's society, it stills plays in the role of how people live and how society has gone through with a change
