1984 is a novel written by George Orwell, which takes place in London, England in 1984. London, is known as Airstrip One, which is part of Oceania, one of three large countries that exist in the world at the time. Oceania is a totalitarian state controlled by Big Bother, and Oceania is always at war with its neighbors Eurasia and Eastasia for control of natural resources. The main character’s name is Winston Smith; Smith is part of the Outer Party and works for the Ministry of Truth, Department of Records. His job was to rewrite history. Winston’s love interest Julia who is also part of the Outer Party, both believe, especially Winston, that life was once different in Oceania. Winston, and sometimes Julia spend a lot of time trying to recall events of the past. The book makes a person wonder about psychological manipulation, the control of history and the re-writing of history. It makes the reader wonder about how modern countries, including the United States, use history to their advantage and how much of the history that we’re being taught is actually true.
In George Orwell’s book, 1984, Winston Smith worked for the Department of Records. The Department of Records was responsible for rewriting history, and to destroy the all evidence that there was ever any other way. Orwell writes:

But these same constitutional rights have recently been misused by those trying to misinform our children regarding numerous inconvenient historical truths in service of politics and religion. Freedom to speak our minds is not the same as "freedom to teach." As a parent, a pediatrician and an educator, I think that school boards and departments of education should be held to a higher standard of "truth telling" than a soapbox orator. Knowingly misrepresenting our history or language constitutes intellectual harassment of our children and it is going on now.
