1984 Persuasive Essay The well-known novel 1984 by George Orwell, is a direct commentary of our present society, the novel talks about media controlling the thoughts of the people, the reoccurring slogans of the party which are, “War is peace, Freedom is slavery and Ignorance is strength” and the idea of doublethink, these are all seen in our society today, but in different forms. In this well writ novel, the citizens of the society are constantly under watch by a figure named Big Brother, there are posters everywhere with these words written on it, “Big brother is watching you” (1984, p.3) the idea that a person with power is watching over everyone may disturb many, but it is actually a reflection on our society today. The CIA for example, is constantly monitoring everyone’s messages, emails, and conversations and the same would go with the American intelligence agencies, they all monitor our every action. Although they do not have signs everywhere saying The CIA is watching you, they do have things similar, like neighborhood watch on windows to alert people that the people around them are watching and do not step out of line. Another contradictory belief in the book that is represented in our society is doublethink, in 1984, it describes double think as, “DOUBLETHINK means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” (1984, p.270) the act of doublethink may play with the reader’s minds but it is actually a very common practice in our everyday lives, in the book, doublethink is shown through the ministries, “The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. These contradictions are not accidental, nor do they result from ordinary hypocrisy; they are deliberate exercises in DOUBLETHINK.” (1984, p.273) this is not far off from our society, as we have peacekeeping forces who kill and if need be,

    George Orwell writes his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four not as a story of fiction but as a warning about the dangers of totalitarian control. The concepts of free enterprise and individual freedom no longer exist in 1984, all of the power is split into three groups Eastasia, Eurasia, and Oceania. In his novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell uses certain literary devices, introduces new linguistic concepts and uses propaganda techniques to suppress freedom, controlling the people and forming a totalitarian society. Orwell introduces two new linguistic concepts in 1984; newspeak, and doublespeak. Newspeak is used by the Party to reduce and limit thought, and simplify the english language to the bare minimum. Doublespeak, on the other hand, which is commonly used by Party members to distort the actually meaning of words, and use the words against those who do not understand what they mean. George Orwell uses the propaganda tactics of “plain folks,” as well as the use of the Big Brother posters to achieve the idea of suppressing freedom. By utilizing propaganda techniques, introducing new language concepts and using literary devices, Orwell successfully warns us about the potential dangers of totalitarian control in our society today.…
