1. To whom is the sermon addressed?
The sermon seems to be addressed to the certain wrong-doing people in the church. The preacher does not seem to be singling any one out but it is clear he is talking about sinners.
2. According to Edwards, why is God wrathful?
According to Edwards God is wrathful because of the wickedness of the people and the treacherous sins that they commit.
3. Reread the sixth paragraph. What people, according to Edwards, are not in the hands of this angry God? How is this state achieved?
The people that keep of their religious affections with God and worship. This state is achieved by reevaluating yourself and reforming yourself where it is needed.
4. Figurative language is language that cannot be taken literally since it was written to produce a certain effect. Edwards makes effective use of figurative language as he speaks of God' s wrath. Find three examples of his use of figurative language and explain why they are effective.
In paragraph 3 he explains God's wrath as being black clouds, in paragraph 4 God's wrath is described as, “Great waters that are dammed for the present...” In paragraph 5 God's wrath is described as a bow that had been bent. This figurative language is so effective because it helps you visualize how strong God's wrath can be. You can visualize black clouds over a plain, or great waves rising above a town, or a bow being bent and an arrow pointed at someone.
