The nature versus nurture conflict has continuously been a controversial subject for the public. People want to know what effects our development, personality, and especially our behavior, which seems to overlap the two. The nature side of the argument believes that a human is developed by the genes that are hard-wired into them. In other words, the reason why this human behaves the way he or she does today is because of the genes he or she were born with. On the other hand is nurture, which says a person is formed into the person they are by the environment. This suggests that a person is born with no inborn tendencies and acquire traits off of the setting and the people they are around. In Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult, Peter Houghton, the main teenage character, suddenly snaps. Prior to Peter’s murders, he showed no aggression or violence whatsoever. Even his childhood best friend, Josie, who eventually became a member of the popular crowd in school, made efforts to back him up. The sudden outburst from Peter clearly demonstrated that his environment shaped him into the killer he became. An adolescent can be bent and twisted into a completely different person. Hostile environments, like Sterling for Peter, could distort any type of personality and shape the person in undesirable ways.…

In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, one of the major themes is the idea that the monster is a representation of the monster within all of us. Also, that the romantic age, which was prominent during the time in which Shelley was writing, was one of the conflicting mindsets that led to Victor Frankenstein’s manipulating and controlling nature, which throws him out of his mind and down a destructive path towards the creation of the monster. In The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, Peter Ackroyd takes the metaphors and themes present in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and makes them more literal in his reimagined work. In Ackroyd’s novel, he sets out to inform the reader that the horrors shown in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein are more real than we would like to believe due to the effects of Romanticism, the Enlightenment, and Atheism.…

    Two Hour Observation

An early childhood setting should invite exploration, give the children the freedom to express themselves, have good schedules, encourage risk taking, and be a learning environment for both children and educators. It should be a setting that promotes initiative rather than passive learning. In order to further analyse and understand early childhood settings I chose option one for this assignment. I decided to further analyse a daycare I volunteer at and really analyse the care centre they provide for the children. I will only refer to what I have seen and learned during my one to two hour observation. During the two-hour observation period, I actually noticed many things I normally did not notice before. This observation experience helped me…

    One Hour Alone

    • 296 Words
    • 2 Pages

For our first assignment in class, we were asked to do a “One Hour Alone” where you sit somewhere quiet, by yourself and just observe your senses and feelings. My one hour alone was very interesting. I chose to sit in my car in front of my house for one hour. At first it was very boring but then I started to think about my life. It was raining outside and I felt so relaxed. All I heard were rain drops dropping on the windshield and I was watching them fall as I laid in my seat. All I could smell is the heat coming from the car and the cup of coffee I had to keep me awake. I started thinking about how much I miss my mom who had left a couple days ago to Jordan to see her sick brother you suffered a stroke and is currently in a coma. I thought about all the moments I had with my uncle and how much of a nice guy he is. My uncle suffering a stoke reminded me of my PED class and how important it is to stay healthy and fit, to prevent stuff like this at an early age. This one hour alone helped me relieve a little stress I had in my life. I thought everything through and little by little I saw myself feeling relieved. It was like a problem and resolution time. I thought about the problem, and I solved it in my head with a good resolution. It's good to be alone every once in a while to think about everything throughly. I felt like I was communicating with myself, and even understanding myself more. I will definitely do this more often with…

Those who identify themselves as technological determinists believe we as humans have remarkably little control over technology and the effect it has on the world. Just two months ago, I passionately denied this point of view and identified myself as a social constructivist. Perhaps it is the idea of not being in complete control of my decisions that I did not want to accept. However, after completing the challenge of going twelve hours without technology, I quickly learned that my thoughts on technological determinism were not in line with my experiences. The fact is technology has become an integral part of day-to-day life. Truly understanding the effects and dare I say, control, that technology has on life, twelve hours without it will certainly enlighten each one of us. In the following pages, I will attempt to describe the challenges of my day without technology. Furthermore, I will attempt to interpret how my experiences relate to my relationship with technology and society. Ultimately, my purpose is to identify events which support or defy the view of technological determinism and understand the driving factors behind them.…
