Time to evaluate your energy choices.
With Earth Day right around the corner, A Moment of Science decided to learn how to better conserve natural resources. Try some of our tips and add your own in the comments section!
The Top 20:
1. Make sure to use your clothes washer and dryer when you have a full load. You could save 1,000 gallons/month!
2. Water your lawn during the evening, when it is cooler and dryer. Watering in the morning, when it is hot and dry, leads to water evaporation.
3. Pick up some earth-bags at your local grocery store. Say no to both, “paper” and “plastic!”
4. Replace your old light bulbs with energy saving fluorescent bulbs. Sure, they may cost more money, but you will save on your energy bill in the future and they last longer.
5. Try shortening your shower by just a minute. You could save
150 gallons/month!
6. Skip the dishwasher built-in dry option and simply air dry your dishes. 7. Collect rainwater and save it to water your lawn.
8. Get rid of objects containing mercury in your home. They’re a health risk and harmful to the environment.
9. Set your fridge to be between 36-38 F degrees and freezer to be between 0-5 F degrees.
10. Save those pesky wire hangers and return them to your neighborhood dry cleaner.
11. UNPLUG unused appliances. Even when powered off, plugged- in appliances use electricity.
12. Plant trees to shade your home. You can save money on air conditioning. 13. Print double-sided. If possible, advocate to make your office or school paper-free.
14. Buy used furniture and re-purpose it. You save money and trees (plus, create original furniture!)
15. Close vents and doors in unused rooms.
16. Buy a stylish ceramic mug for your daily cup of coffee instead of using a disposable cup.
17. Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket.
18. Try a dimmer switch. They’re easy to install and save energy!
19. Turn your computer off when you go to sleep .
20. Make sure to inflate your tires

The United States leaves a huge carbon footprint through energy use, this can be reduced by: building energy efficient homes, reducing motor vehicle use, and recycling more. Some energy related activities were the lowering energy costs in the home. People sometimes think this to be hard but here are some good steps to follow to make it seem it easier. Reset the water heater thermostat, people do not always realize that most water heaters heat water to a set temperature and then hold it there, meaning that throughout the day and night the water heater cycles on and off, just maintaining that already set temperature. If we were to go the water heater and lower the setting a few degrees it can often save half as much energy and the chances are turning down the temperature won’t even be noticeable to most members of the family. Another way to lower energy costs in the home is with a programmable thermostat for heating the home. Just like the water heater maintains a set temperature even when it is not being used a thermostat does the exact same thing for your entire home. When we are just letting it cool off (or warm up) when there is no one awake can save energy and money as well. By letting the house cool on its own and not turning up the thermostat this can save you money. This change will usually pay for itself in around three years. We also have attic and wall insulation where there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperate, the more energy this will take to maintain a temperature of comfort in our homes. By adding insulation between the indoors and the outdoors we are reducing the energy demand. This of course depends on where you live, because the savings from insulating your walls and attic could almost double the savings. This will pay back in 3 ½ years to 12 years…

We have also replaced a large number of our incandescent lightbulbs with fluorescent bulbs. The cost of these bulbs has come down to the point where they are now very cost effective and they consume much less energy. They screw into your light fixtures like a traditional bulb and last up to 13 times as long. The bulbs you can buy today are much higher quality than in the past with less flicker and with a warmer light. Because an incandescent bulb wastes as much as 90% of its energy as heat, the power consumption of the cooler-running fluorescent bulbs is much less. According to the Georgia Interfaith Power & Light company, "Each 13-watt compact fluorescent (CFL), over the expected 10,000 hour life of the bulbs, will save 470 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity as compared to 60-watt incandescent bulbs. This translates to a global warming-fighting reduction of over 730 pounds of carbon dioxide. It also means a reduction of 1.6 pounds of nitrogen…
