I think that layers of irony also contribute to the story's tone .While Fortunato remains blissfully ignorant of Montresor's true intentions for most of the story ,the evident pleasure Montresor takes in relating his story.Montresor's pursuit of revenge against Fortunato represents the enactment of an elaborate ritual that resembles the profane rites ,the pervasive irony of Montresor's complicates attemps to understand his motives and other conflicts as heart of the tale .The name of the Montresor and Fortunato also have another meaning ,they may allude the ending of this story and the personality traits of these people.

In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe uses irony to develop the central idea of revenge. He uses irony in naming the character of Fortunato. Fortunato’s name means “fortune”. He is a man of wealth who is being blindly led to his death by Montresor in search of justifiable revenge. Poe also uses irony in the dialogue, “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today”. Montresor is pleased to see him. Although Fortunato looks good now, he will be dead by the end of the story when Montresor puts his plan into action. Later, Montresor is concerned about his coughing. Montresor said, “We will go back. Your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved..”. Montresor tells him to go back because…

Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the characters do not. The entire story is based on dramatic irony, given that the audience knows from the beginning that Montresor is plotting his revenge and poor Fortunado does not. A more specific example is the line where Fortunado says he will not die of a cough. The audience knows that he will endure Montresor’s revenge soon. When the characters first meet in the beginning of the story, there is also dramatic irony because Fortunado obviously thinks fondly of Montresor and is happy to see him. It is a very hectic and festive event, and Fortunado probably thought he was very lucky to chance upon Montresor and given the opportunity to help out a friend and sample some very expensive wine. The audience has the foreknowledge however, that this wasn’t a joyous occasion and that Fortunado was about to meet his untimely demise. Poe’s use of dramatic irony allows the audience to be a part of Montresor’s plan and gives a glimpse into his dark…

Montresor baits Fortunato by using his weakness, the love of wine. Another weakness he displays is his ego and Montresor knows this. It doesn 't take much for him to be baited into sampling his supposed newly acquired pipe of amontillado. During the trip in the catacombs Montresor compels him many times to return to the surface because of his cold, but Fortunato being drunk and a fool wants to be the one to sample the amontillado. He fails to understand the foreshadowing that Montresor provides him with the mason 's trowel, even when he asks about the Montresor coat of arms. "A huge human foot d 'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel" (Poe 208). He must not have realized how serious Montresor takes his pride. When he finally has him chained to the wall he is very shocked. His disbelief that his friend lured him to his death leaves him practically speechless. He quickly sobers up and begins to moan and cry, then to pull at the chains trying to escape then in a last ditch effort he begins to scream. Either in hopes that someone would hear him and come to his rescue or upon the realization that he is about to die. He knows that this is no joke, but he gives Montresor a chance at redemption by pretending that it is. Unfortunately whatever insult Fortunato had given, it leads to his demise. In the end all he can do is beg…

The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.” “Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado”. (Meyer,741).Montresor knows that Fortunato is a very arrogant man. What is so ironic about this conversation is that Montresor seems to care about Fortunato’s health and yet he wants to murder him. Another example; of irony would be when Montresor tells all of servants to stay home for the night. The last example of irony , would be that they are set in the middle of the Catacombs and how Fortunato asks Montresor if he is in the Masons. ““You do not…

There is a lot of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something the character does not. Well montresor want to kill fortunato & fortunato doesn't know this. Montresor wants to kill fortunato because fortunato insulted montresor. Montresor has created two elements of dramatic irony here. On one hand, we understand that Fortunato, because of the unidentified "insult," has been fooled into believing that Montresor has not been offended by Fortunato's action. Also Montresor appears unaware that he has disclosed a serious character flaw. He appears to the reader as a man consumed by hatred and whose nature is deceitful--he smiles in the face of his friend even tho he is planning to destroy him. Verbal and dramatic irony combine again when Montresor "broke and reached him [Fortunato] a flagon of De Grave," which Fortunato drinks until it's gone. Poe is, of course, playing with words--the wine has a name that can be translated as "of the grave," another instance of verbal irony but, more important, another signal to the reader that Fortunato is an unaware walking dead…

To begin with, Montresor is an unreliable narrator. I think this because in the beginning of the story,(174) Montresor does not give any background or evidence of being insulted by Fortunato. The texts says, “ The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could...” Usually, when you are blaming someone that has done wrong to you, you would give a background, or evidence that they are in the wrong. My reason number two is that Montresor exaggerates his feelings and actions in the story, which is also why I believe he is bragging about his crime. “There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time...I well knew, to ensure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned.” (176) Here is a perfect example of Montresor's bragging. He's basically saying that, he the best of the best, the head chief, and everyone knows when he says to do something, they do it.…

Due to the revenge that arises from jealousy and pride, the Montresor, the protagonist, is so deeply involved in his thoughts of revenge from Fortunato, he does not even state why he seeks out revenge and the motive behind it. Pride, jealousy and the concept of killing someone go back to the time when people first came around. In the article, by Renee, she states when thoughts of revenge are developed in a person’s mind, it causes him to go insane and there is no time for second thoughts (1). The very first sentence from the story is “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” this clearly depicts the major theme of the story, enrooted in Montresor’s mind (DiYanni…

Still, it also is a complex situation open to individual interpretation. Montresor plan of murder is motivated by a number of insults which are never mention in the story. However, the constantly indication of his family to be involved on the conflict may well take the reader to believe on a possible payback for some past encounter between families of society and power. The narrator’s tone when describing Fortunato, is a held feeling of likely envy, “You are rich, respected, admired, beloved, you are happy, as once I was.” Montresor sees on Fortunato, what he proclaims had once and misses at the moment. Therefore, Montresor reliability is to be…
