2013 Teacher's exam on Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses
First, restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses differ in terms of punctuation and prosodic features. In terms of punctuation, nonrestrictive relative clauses accompany short pauses and commas around it whereas restrictive clauses do not. Nonrestrictive ones do so because their role is only to provide additional information about their antecedent regardless of the flow of their main clause, so they need to be separated from the main clause. On the other hand, restrictive clauses are needed to identify their antecedent, and they need to be read right after them without pauses in speech communication. In terms of prosodic characteristics, nonrestrictive clauses apply rising-falling intonation pattern to their antecedent, while it is not adopted in that of restrictive clauses. To be specific, nonrestrictive clause is an additional which can be separated from its main clause, but restrictive is not. This brings whether it uses rising-falling intonation to imply that it is separated, or original intonation to show that it is part of the main clause. Second, two different sentences can be made to illustrate the given pictures. The one for picture 1 may be, ‘The girls, who are wearing a skirt, are dancing. The other one for picture two can be, ‘The girls who are wearing a skirt are dancing.’ This difference comes from the two pictures where all the girls are wearing a skirt as in picture 1, and only some of them wearing a skirt as in picture 2. The fact that wearing a skirt does work to identify the antecedent in 2, which means that the clause should be restrictive, but it does not in 1, and it means that a nonrestrictive clause should be used. Third, there are several nonrestrictive modifications from the underlined modifiers in . To begin with, 1 is nonrestrictive because Ted Baker is a name of a certain person which itself identifies the reference. The clause only provides additional information about the head. Next, 2 is also a nonrestrictive since it modifies ‘his

MITM attacks are difficult to avoid because even if they are occurring you do not often know about them. The best we can do is mitigate the chance of them occurring by making it more difficult for attackers by using cryptographic techniques. This can then be followed up with other techniques to further enhance the secureness and private-ness of our communications. We want to protect against MITM attacks to keep our sensitive data private and avoid any negative implications that releasing this data may…

Most businesses start with the primary thought of making money. As a small grocery store chain, it is hard to compete with the larger national grocery stores, which often force the smaller local stores out of business. It is this dynamic, with the help of consumers, which is forcing both small and large businesses to reconsider their organizational goals and outcomes to include social responsibility. A successful business understands their customers, learns what their customers presently need, and foresees what their customers will need in the future.…

D: Introduction As a teacher living in a highly religious state, it is important for me to know more about the main religions in Utah. The two most prevalent, being the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Catholic faith. I would like to know more about their beliefs, holidays, and family traditions. Some of the main beliefs in the LDS culture are Jesus is the Savior of all man, The Word of Wisdom, and the church was restored by their Prophet Joseph Smith. Some of the main beliefs for the Catholic faith are the Bible, the different Saints, and baptism. There are many holidays that are celebrated by both religions. Both Catholics and LDS members celebrate Christmas and Easter. The LDS faith in Utah has a special state holiday that is called pioneer day. The Catholic faith celebrates a holiday called All Saints Day. The third theme that I am going to look at in each faith is family traditions. Both cultures have a lot of respect for family traditions and rituals. In the LDS faith some of the main ideas are Family Home Evening, Genealogy, and keeping the Sabbath Day holy. In the Catholic faith, some of the favorites are Lent, 1st communion and Prayer or grace. I will take a more in depth look at all of these areas throughout my paper. E. Results First, I would like to take a look at the beliefs of the LDS Church starting with Jesus as their Savior. The LDS people believe that Jesus was sent to earth to be a Savior of all souls (Smith & Pratt, 1986). He was born to the Virgin Mary and led a giving and amazing life. The LDS church believes that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the entire world and in that, created…

All organizations and agencies have got to consider all goals. All of the goals they have to consider are the following; short term, long term, manifest and even latent. All these goals help in developing its goals and objective statements. These are very essential in an organizations and agencies. To some, at first, the goals are not always clear and can seem kind of vague. All individuals take things differently. When an organization, agency, or even smaller programs is established the goals show the reason for it even being established in the first place. It shows what is hoped to be accomplished. A goal statement is always present. An example of a goal statement would be something on this level: To help all neglected and abused children in the State of Arkansas. This statement does not get into detail of what, who, how or even when, but you do get an idea and feel of the agency purpose and plans. A more completed goal statement would be more on the level of: This agency will provide long term help for children that has been neglected or abused by the parents or guardians; we will help to place them in a safer environment.…

Throughout my childhood, my father had always traveled between Los Angeles, California and Uruapan Michoacán in Mexico. He would work for six months in California and then return to Mexico for the rest of the year without a need to work. Why would a father put his family through these challenges? Besides the obvious reason of our family needing finances, we later discovered that our dad, upon reaching his thirties, was going through some sort of midlife crisis. My 15 year old brother Joe joined a gang short after my dad left back to the United States. He became difficult and refused to listen to our mother. He would stroll the the streets all night and routinely come back home with items we suspect were stolen. My parents had always pondered upon and discussed the consequences of leaving us alone, without the guidance and support of both a mother and father. But because of our financial situation, my father needed to make the sacrifice. We all needed to sacrifice something.…

Texas: For over a 100 years Texas was a one-party state of Democrats (Munisteri). Republicans did not have a chance until Abraham Lincoln who was against slavery and defended the Union during the Civil War. During this time before Republicans took over Texas was free-willed and won majority of seats in the race and had all seats in Legislature. One of the best ways to describe this era was best stated by Author Steven, “developed a free spirit, a pride in self-reliance and a work ethic that is still unmatched today “Early Texans lived, loved and died entirely by their own efforts without relying on government to fulfill their needs. Just like modern Texans, early settlers believed in families, churches and neighbors, not in bureaucracy” (Munisteri).…
