This first piece of assessment requires you to answer a set question:
How has technology impacted on police accountability? Use a media example from the past 12 months to help illustrate your point.
This essay question is asking you to engage in a discussion about the impact of technology on policing. Specifically it is asking you to think about how technology has strengthened or weakened police accountability.
Firstly, you will need to define what specific “technology” you are referring to.
Technology is a broad area and you are not expected to engage with the various types of technology which are available. Rather, this essay requires you to select one type of “technology” and explore how this has impacted on police accountability.
Examples of technology given in class included camera footage (for example, through smartphones or body cams) and GPS tracking. You could also look at social media (such as Twitter and Facebook) or any other type of technology you are interested in.
You will need to address the advantages and disadvantages that this particular “technology” has on police accountability. Remember, you must link this to police accountability. It is not an essay about the arguments for or against a specific technology per se, it is about how it is linked to police accountability.
Does it strengthen or weaken police accountability?
Are there any unintended consequences?
You are required to use a media example from the last 12 months to help illustrate your point.
This media example does not have to be Australian. You can use an example from any jurisdiction.
