The Assignment:
The purpose of the Short Synthesis paper is to introduce, compare and contrast, and analyze the arguments available on your topic chosen for the Short and Long Synthesis papers.
Basic Requirements for the Short Synthesis Essay:
The length will be 4 and ½ to 5 pages in length, not including the Works Cited page.
It will present and support a thesis about the quality of the research available on the topic.
Introduce, cite, and compare and contrast four to five academic sources—not more than that.
Use MLA format, in-text and bibliographic citation.
It should include an original title, be double-spaced, use a standard twelve point font, and contain one inch margins.
What is an Argument Synthesis?
Simply stated, “A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on two or more sources” (Behrens and Rosen 99). If analysis (used in the Critique paper) indicates a “pulling apart” and the close examination of a subject, synthesis indicates “bringing together” or reconfiguring ideas and sources. Essentially, synthesis is the act of bringing ideas and sources back together to form a new whole, a unique discussion.
In Synthesis, the purpose is to gather expert sources on a topic, compare and contrast the opinions of those experts, and analyze the arguments. Essentially, the Short Synthesis provides readers with a “review of the literature” on a subject. It should provide an overview of the various professional or academic perspectives on the topic.
Students will integrate and introduce their sources into the discussion. Simply supporting the argument using only citation is not synthesis. Ideas and arguments presented in the sources
