Because members were already somewhat familiar with one another, the beginning stage did not take too long as members all ready had some level of comfort with each other. I did, however, allow members the opportunity to briefly discuss what they wished to achieve from the group meetings. The members that did decide to discuss their concerns during the “introductory stage” were members that were employed at the employer the longest and that were on the brink of wanting to quit. I advised these…

Our first few moments consisted of unloading the van, and meeting Stentson Carpenter. He was the CEO of Rainbow Omega. He started the organization after his son passed away from down syndrome. He was determined and inspired to create a place where people like his son could reside and be cared for. After meeting Stentson, we got to meet the residents. They came in to the vocational building. The vocational building is where we stayed. It had a kitchen, laundry machines for the residents, a main area for various activities, and two small rooms for us to stay in. They came in through the side door into the main area. I remember I was nervous and yet anxious at the same time to meet them. We have a guy in our youth group who has down syndrome and I was and still am very comfortable around him, but meeting 82 people like him, made me uneasy. Josh was the first person I met. He was a little shy but very excited for us to be there. After getting to know me a little bit, he considered us best friends. He was no longer shy or scared around…

My youth group has created a special place in my life. It provides me with Godly friends and a non-judging environment. After moving around so many times in my life it has become hard to make friends. I have been to many different youth groups and most of them I feel the need to pretend to be who I am not. Thankfully, at Rocky Bayou youth group I can drop my guard and I feel free to talk without feeling judged. Surprisingly enough, I have made multiple friends that are supportive, honest, and amusing. Rocky Bayou youth group makes me feel welcome and free to me without harsh worldly…

One my way to the meeting I was feeling really anxious. I didn’t really know what to expect. I could imagine how many people would be there or what the energy would be like. I wondered if there would be tears, or laughter. If it would be happiness or solemn silence. I had never been to anything like that so I think the feeling was just me being completely unsure. I was also excited to see what it would be like. To hear what they had to say and to connect with them.…

In a group interaction, being able to communicate was easy as we were able to take turn in speaking therefore everyone was heard around the group so there was no barriers of any other group member taking over the conversation or dominating the communication cycle between the groups. There was no group leader in this form of group interaction however another example of a group interaction in a health and social care setting where it is possible for a leader to be present within the other member who dominated both the communicational skills and interactive skills of the other members for example when a doctor is giving a briefing to the other, lower positioned nurses and doctors. This is where the head doctor takes the lead and may use a strong and firm tone to communicate to the rest of the group members. Also there would be minimum group interaction within the circle as it would be a formal…

During the meeting there was a break where everyone stood up and got coffee and broke into a small conversation groups. The was where I did most of my observing and began to realize even more these people are people just like me, the only difference between them and I was that their reactions to situations were different than mine. Stories were told of going to birthday parties, dinner and even work situations. These stories were no different than my everyday life, the only difference was that after the situations I like to come home and talk to my children and husband they like to have a drink to relax. As the meeting came to an end another pledge was being spoke and everyone stood up and held hands in a circle for the pledge. It was at that very moment I was no longer nervous and had changed my thoughts. I held hands, I joined the group, and I wanted to help be a part of their recovery…

This essay is a reflection on my observation of how a group interacts with each other. The 12-step meeting I attended was Overeater’s Anonymous (OA). OA uses the same Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions as Alcoholics Anonymous, the words are changed from “alcoholic” to “compulsive overeater”. The meeting I went to had seven people in attendance even with this small of a group it was definitely a diverse group. All seven attendees were women whose ages ranged from a young college student to an elderly homemaker, there was a middle age professional (just left the office type), and a good old ranch gal boot wearing, hair in a braid ranch women. I was a bit nervous about being there but someone patted the seat next to herself and I immediately felt welcomed.…

The structure of any group is a pool where a group leader emerges to spearhead others toward the attainment of the entire group’s objective. “Very often, the most effective leadership occurs when a leader emerges from a group rather than being promoted, elected, or appointed. The leaders of many political, religious, and community organizations emerge” (Engleberg & Wynn, 2010, p.113).…

The first group therapy meeting beings with a hold up at gunpoint before everybody meets. That put a lot of undue stress that changed the nature of how they were able to form a group. This actually helped set the stage of self-disclosure without the fear of acceptance that usually occurs at this stage. There was more pressing outside dynamics that made the situation seem less important. What was most significant that came of this meeting was everyone boldly evaluated themselves which allowed them to confront their own fears directly. Being tied up prompted everybody to face their own fears of the unknown. Each person tried to justify why they wanted to join the group and what kind of outcome they were expecting. Most of…

The furniture looked worn and the room seemed to have been used for AA meetings over many years. The chairs were medal with different pillows on the seats to make them more comfortable. There was a coffee machine in the back of the room by the door and a small restroom. The room was a little cold in temperature. There were about thirty people in the room and almost all the chairs were used. The environment was welcoming and rural; however the new members might be thrown off by the lack of diversity and demographics. I was worried about being in a group with someone I knew due to being in my hometown. My fears came…

This was my first day with a new workshop group, so I was kind of nervous. Since this was the second day for this workshop to meet, it seemed everyone was already acquainted with each other. Although, we started the workshop with everyone giving a brief introduction about themselves. This made me feel a lot more comfortable and closer with the group. I learned a lot of interesting things about my new facilitators. Glen was born and raised from North Carolina. He described himself as a renaissance man; the way he introduced his lifestyle and hobbies to us that is the perfect way to describe him. Glen is passionate about the outdoors; surfing and hiking, and loves to remodel furniture. His favorite summer vacation was living the whole summer on the beach which he spent surfing, driving his jeep, and cutting meats at his deli. Super cool. Amber is very happily married. She loves cartoons and anime. Throughout the workshop, I noticed how passionate she takes her job. She seemed very kind and caring towards her students that was taking this workshop…

In less than 45-hours of encounter I have finally found myself in a place where I may belong. We were so overwhelmed when we got to meet the community especially when we came in, the way they greeted us as part of their family was very flattering even though they didn’t know who we are and where we came from. I am very grateful that they welcomed us wholeheartedly that’s why I didn’t hesitate myself to opened my arms and embraced them.…
