Dear 20th Century Fox Studios,
First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Sara McGee and I am a student of Homer-Center High School. I absolutely love to read, which brings me to the main reason why I am writing this letter. Out of the books I have read in my life, I can truthfully tell you that The Fault in Our Stars was one of my top favorites. I got done with it in two days because I simply could not put it down. I had a lot of people tell me how amazing this book was and how I would love it, so I tried it out. I thanked all of the people that recommended it to me whenever I was finished, and now I am …show more content…
recommending it to you. Hopefully when you get done with it, you come to the same conclusion that I did. This book would make one amazing movie.
Here is how the book basically goes down. There is a girl that is slowly dying of cancer, and one day at a meeting she meets a really attractive kid. The attractive kid also is dying of cancer, and soon after they fall in love with each other. The attractive kid uses his Make a Wish on the girl and they head to Amsterdam to meet a certain author whom she idolizes. The trip ends up being a nightmare and she finds out that her favorite author is nothing but an old drunk that hates kids. The cancer between the two starts to get worse and in a horrible twist of fate, the girl lives and the attractive kid ends up dying. Worried that he left her nothing, she ends up finding a letter that he had written to her favorite author basically confessing his undesirable love for her. I think something about all good movies is the emotions that go along with them. You do not want to sit there and watch a movie that does not make you laugh, or cry, or anything at all. You want to be interested and able to show that emotion, which is why I think the story line is perfect for that. It gives you everything, the laughs, the cries, the heartbreak, the smiles.
Now let me introduce the characters of the book. Hazel Grace Lancaster is one of the main characters. She is a girl who has cancer, and she has no illusions about her state of health. Hazel knows that she will never be a typical teenage cheerleader, despite the fact that she is on drugs that keeps her tumors in check. She is not one to sit around and be depressed about it though, she tackles it with a healthy dose of humor. Hazel is in her own little world, and does not really care what others have to say about her. She does not follow most trends, she likes what she likes. Augustus Waters is another one of the main characters. He is the attractive kid that Hazel meets at Support Group, also fighting cancer himself. Augustus is everything that you would want in a guy. He has the confidence, good looks, and quick wit to back it all up. Unlike Hazel, who is cautious and does not want to take any risks of hurting anyone, Augustus is determined to leave a mark on everything and everyone that he touches. He likes to make things happen, whether it is getting Hazel to watch a movie at his house the first second he meets her, or taking an adventure to Amsterdam to meet her favorite author. Augustus definitely lives his life to the fullest, considering any day could be his last. Peter Van Houten is a bona fide alcoholic and the author of Hazel Graze’s dreams. Whenever Hazel and Augustus go to see him in Amsterdam, he was incredibly rude, abrasive, and drunk. He basically crushes Hazel’s hopes and dreams right in front of her, refusing to answer questions about one of his books. However, deep down inside Van Houten, he does really care about children with cancer. It is just the fact that they remind of things in his life that are painful, causing him to act out. The last character that was important is Isaac. He is a true friend to Hazel and Augustus. Unfortunately for him, he loses his eyesight from cancer, and then gets dumped by his girlfriend, Monica, because of it. He shows more of the angry part of cancer. While Hazel and Augustus laugh it off and show no care, Isaac seems like he does not want to care, but does, way too much. He shows that cancer is not just sad, but also frustrating and unfair. All of these characters fit together perfectly. They show all of the effects that cancer has on its victims, and how well they deal with it. Having these characters in the movie as well, would add a lot of variation. Hazel and Augustus would bring us laughs, while Isaac and Van Houten would bring us anger and frustration yet a little heartbreak. All of the characters are so interesting it would be silly not to add them in the movie.
This book being about cancer, you already know there is going to be a conflict in it, that obvious conflict being cancer. Although cancer brings Hazel and Augustus together, it is also the horrible beast that is killing them both. Hazel’s cancer is the reason why her lungs are hardly working and she is forced to carry around all of her burdens in a form of an oxygen tank on wheels. Cancer also conflicts with Gus and Hazel’s relationship, limiting their time together. Hazel finds conflict in herself, not because of cancer, but how her living affects everybody around her. She says in the book that she is like a grenade, ready to explode (die) at any moment, making her not want to get close to anybody or anything. She believes that the less people she meets the less of a mark she will leave when she goes. Her meeting Augustus and putting another person in danger of hurting when she dies, is just yet another problem she had to face with herself. Putting these conflicts in the movie will definitely get the viewer thinking of how their lives are and how much worse they could be. They would cry and feel such strong emotion towards these kids, hoping to never have to go through the same thing. That will make the movie have an actual purpose, a movie somebody will want to actually watch.
The setting in the book is Indianapolis. For Hazel and her companions, their hometown is surrounded by places that are often used for cancer kids: hospitals, support groups, each other’s homes. When reading, you feel as if you are cooped up in Hazel’s house right along with her, after all, that is where Hazel spends most of her days. There is not much for Hazel and them to do in their town, especially being a cancer patient; they are very limited to where they can go. Once Hazel can actually leave her claustrophobic life, the setting sets in Amsterdam which is the complete opposite of Indianapolis. Amsterdam is known for cobblestone streets, canals, bicycles, coffee shops, artists, and romance. When they arrive here, they act as if it is a whole different world for them, because it is. They have never seen anything so beautiful. Amsterdam will give the viewers such a refreshing feeling after having seen Indianapolis. I think these two places will definitely give the movie some more character. Indianapolis fits perfectly for the state of health that Augustus and Hazel are in. Amsterdam fits for when they are actually living and doing something worth their time. Basically, the setting goes along with how Augustus and Hazel are feeling, and how the viewers should feel when watching the movie. It should be settled that the movie will have to be shot in these two places to get the full effect of their feelings.
Fitting actors and actresses to the main characters in the book was not really the easiest thing.
For Hazel, I think she should played by Anna Sophia Robb. I say this because of the other movies that I have seen her play in. She has been in a movie where she lost an arm and had to continue her lifelong goal of surfing. She is such a beautiful girl too; I think she would fit perfectly for Hazel. She is strong and definitely has what it takes to take on the role of a girl that is slowly dying of cancer. For Augustus, I would say he would need to be played by Alex Pettyfer. He has starred in a lot of romantic movies where he plays the kid that everybody loves, which is why he came into my mind when looking for somebody to play Augustus. Plus, I think Anna and Alex would definitely make a cute couple. A lot of viewers would watch the movie just because these two are in it. For Van Houten, I was thinking Clint Eastwood. He has a lot of spice to him, which is something that Van Houten has for sure. I know I have watched a couple movies where Clint Eastwood has just been a stingy old man, so that is why he came in mind for that role. Last but not least, we have Isaac, who should be played by Ezra Miller. He played off of a movie where he was also a third wheel to a couple and definitely a good friend to both of them, which is nothing but perfect for the role of Isaac. All of these actors, I think, fit perfectly with the characters in the book, and hopefully you will agree with
that.
After having read all of my ideas and information that I have provided, I hope that you will consider turning one of my favorite books into an amazing movie. I promise you that you will not regret it one bit, and that it will be such a huge seller. So many people will get excited about this book becoming a movie, nothing could possibly go wrong. Thank you for your time and I hope I spread some hope into each and every one of you that this movie will be the best thing that you ever produced.
Sincerely,
Sara McGee
