The Wednesday War by Gary D. Schmidt is an interesting realistic fiction novel that illustrates the life of a seventh grade boy named Holling Hoodhood. His accounts begin during the Vietnam War, which brings sadness to those around him. The tragic events during 1967 affect the way Holling looks at the world. This includes discrimination to his Vietnamese friend. He also learns very important life lessons from Shakespeare’s books, which Mrs. Baker forced him to read.…
I have recently finished the book "Fever 1789" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was filled with a roller coaster of emotion leaving the reader on the edge before every chapter. The description in the book fills my mind of how it was back in the 1700's. This book demostrats a good understanding of the environment and tone in the book. At the end of the book it shows real life sections of how Anderson used history into a fictional story. The other book i'm reading is "Night" by Ellie Wiesel. It shows a similiar dark approach to the book's setting. The book is based off Ellie's life in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime. Ellie was only just a young boy and he had to endure painful suffering. Watching the people die around you and seeing your…

In the novel Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, Billy Pilgrim experiences time differently from any other person. Instead of experiencing time in a linear fashion, Billy jumps randomly throughout all of the events in his life. It is this random experience of time that allows Vonnegut to enforce the themes of senseless violence and the illusion of choice.…
Elie Wiesel wrote the novel “Night”. This novel was based on his experiences as a Jewish child during the holocaust. Wiesel was one of four children, he had 2 older sisters and 1 younger sister. They grew up in Romania with their mother and father. In 1940 during the war his father was invited to a meeting where they discovered the Germany army was transporting everyone in his town to ghettos. In may of 1944 the German authorities deported most of the Jewish community to Aushwitz concentration camp.In this concentration camp he was separated from his mother and three sisters, but he did remain with his father for a majority or his time spent in the concentration camps. When they arrived at aushwitz they were taken to a shower to strip of all clothing and disinfect, then they were sent to the barber and then sent to get their number tattooed on their arm . Their identity was completely confiscated from them.Elie worked hard and remained as healthy as he possibly could or could seem so him and his father would last the constant checks. Elies father was nearly dead at the end but could only manage to keep him alive for so long before the guards realize he was not useful. Elies father was killed two weeks before American troops invaded aushwitz and slowly saved the remaining Jewish prisoners. When out Elie found out that his father, his mother, and his youngest sister did not survive.…

In the story Of Mice and Men many characters break social conventions with each other. Comparing Lennie and Montresour the both of them can be unpredictable. Each one has a different belief system. How this comparison is shown is how I believe they broke social conventions in favor of their own ideas…
The movie "Twelve Angry Men" by Reginald Rose is a drama that displays twelve jurors' in-depth reasoning to decide a unanimous decision on the defendant's sentence. There are many assets and liabilities of the group that play a role in their decision making. The jurors are all defined in terms of their personalities, backgrounds, prejudices and emotional tilts. The Holocaust was an awful thing. I don’t think it was right at all. It definitely should not had happen at all. It was an unlawful act by humans on other humans. Ellie and all the other survivors are very brave and courageous people for sharing the horrific stories with the rest of the world. I’m sure that with out all their stories we wouldn’t know how bad the Holocaust was.…
Stephen King is a man of many talents and personalities; not only is he able to scare his readers immensely, he is also able to make them laugh. I chose a passage from Stephen King's On Writing for this assignment; the passage stuck in my mind for a long time after I finished the book. His writing style is unique compared to the other autobiographies I have read over the years. Everything that a person writes has a meaning or purpose whether it's a letter or an essay and voice, tone, and style play a very important part in how the reader views the piece of writing. King manipulates the rules of writing in order to emphasize the meaning of the passage, which is to describe an early childhood experience, so the reader will come away from it with a better understanding of the man behind the book.…
1984 by George Orwell is a novel about a man, Winston Smith, living in a dystopian, totalitarian government. The book circulates around the negative ideal of a harsh government strictly controlling the people of a society. 1984 shares some unique similarities as well as differs greatly from actual life that many English lived during the 80’s, even though the book was written nearly 40 years prior and was not looking at a realistic interpretation of what the world would be like. Orwell had a specific idea his book would flow around; Humans cannot be completely controlled by government. But as we near the end of the book, it becomes clearer that in extremely harsh circumstances, one can be fully controlled when faced with fear.…
While Stephen King has rightfully garnered a reputation as a horror writer, some of his best fiction revolves around stories of everyday humanity affected by elements of the supernatural, such as the Dead Zone. After awakening from a five-year coma, John Smith has come back from the ether with a clairvoyance to see certain futures and hidden pasts of others by touch alone. Opting to use his powers for good, John is called upon for such tasks as helping the police to catch a elusive rappist. when he shakes hands with a political candidate at a rally, he sees a future where the candidate will start a nuclear holocaust as president. Leading John to the ultimate dilemma of potentially altering the future, and perhaps even…
The short story "Cathedral", written by Raymond Carver, was first published in 1983. This short story deals with one main problem: Prejudices. The short story is about a man, the narrator, which wife is going to meet her old friends, Robert, whom is blind. At first the main character aren’t looking forward meeting the blind man. His sigh of being a handicapped is narrow-minded: “In the movies, the blind move slowly and never laughed” (ll. 8-9). Prejudices are something that has always existed and it’s a huge problem because it causes a lot of conflict between people. This is especially seen with undereducated people because they do not know enough about other people’s cultures or lifestyles and therefore draw assumptions based on unreliable sources such as movies and other types of media. The main character undergoes a progress throughout the story where he develops; first he is negative about the whole situation, afterward his eyes opens up. Who is really the blind one? This short story is dealing with two men, each with their handicap.…
