The dyad session experience over the past 6 weeks has been an effective exercise in learning to apply social work skills and theories. I have found great value in self-reflection as well as constructive feedback from my partner. Over the course of the dyad sessions I feel I have made progress and evolved to become a better social worker then I started the class as. Another helpful aspect of the dyads is that they are being performed concurrently to the practicum. At my practicum I have the opportunity to learn and practice counseling skills on an individual and group level. Practicing counseling and receiving feedback through the classroom experience has helped me grow and evolve as a social worker at my practicum placement as well. Critical thinking and analysis using the self-evaluation have helped me become more aware of my skill strengths as well as the areas that need further development.
Strengths
I feel that as a social worker I have strong skill practice in many areas. One particular area that I implement well is motivational interviewing. I am very good at quickly analyzing what a client is saying and reflecting statements and feelings back to them in a manner that promotes critical thinking and self-reflection in the client. I do not offer advice or propose solutions to the client. I do my best to ask reflective open ended questions so that the client can come to their own solutions. I do not lecture, monopolize or stack questions. I have become very self-aware of my presentation during therapy sessions. Self-awareness allows me to evaluate my performance and be open to constructive criticism and feedback. Another strength is my ability to document sessions in the form of DAP notes and SOAP notes. I have received feedback from my task instructor at practicum, who compliments my note writing skills. I believe that my tone, nuances, and speech tempo are appropriate. I consistently make the effort to clarify what the
