Due to rise in levels of unemployment for those in the age brackets of 16-24year old over the last 10 years, the government set up the September Guarantee to give this age range more opportunity post education. It is predominantly aimed at 14-19yr olds and meant that once they left compulsory education, by the end of September that same year they would have a place in some kind of further education. This was to avoid them becoming ‘NEETS’ or Not in Employment, Education or Training.
The training or equivalent must be appropriate to the person and not a topic they have no interest in continuing with after the event.

Some of awards cover a broad industry sector whereas others are more specialist qualifications in regards to a specific part of the sector or designed for a specific job role. Vocational qualifications come in different ratings with an Award being the smallest, followed by the Certificate and then the highest is a Diploma
Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Apprenticeships are a merger of study in conjunction with practical on job training. Due to the fact that the student gets paid, they offer the chance to learn at the same time as earning a wage. Experienced staff work in conjunction with the student allowing them to acquire skills relevant to that particular job, as well as gaining an increasingly well-respected qualification. They can take anything between one and four years. Like Vocational Qualifications, Apprenticeships also come in 3 levels, namely; Apprenticeship, Advanced Apprenticeship and finally Higher Apprenticeship.
If a student has not yet gained enough experience to apply for an apprenticeship place then they may be eligible for a traineeship instead. These are designed to provide the student with the necessary training in order to progress to employment or apply for an apprenticeship. Traineeships are also
