3 Page Paper On Sesshu Toyo
A second prominent artist to appear during the Muromachi period is a man by the name of Sesshu Toyo. Sesshu Toyo was born in what was known as the Bitchu Province, in Japan in 1420 and lived until 1506. A rather well-known anecdote about the young Sesshu was that apparently the future painter at first did not study Zen Buddhism with enough dedication. He preferred instead to spend his time drawing. Once, he was punished for his disobedience by being tied to a pillar at the hall of the Soja temple. After a while, a priest visited him and jumped with surprise, thinking there was a mouse next to Sesshu’s foot. However, upon closer inspection the priest saw it was a picture painted from Sesshu’s tears. His life then became centered on Buddhism

“Ama no Hashidate, Landscape of Mountain and Sandbar” (King & Chilvers, 2008, p. 188) was the masterpiece of Toyo Sesshu. Painted in 1465, this piece was created in the style known as “haboku” or broken ink. At a young age Sesshu was trained in the tradition of Chinese ink painting and later became a Buddhist monk. When his training was completed, he left China and returned to his native land. Once there he would produce such paintings as the “Winter Landscape” (King & Chilvers, 2008, p. 188) and (Landscape of the Four Seasons” (Rumsey, 2004). His values as a Buddhist monk would reveal itself in his art. Keeping true to this style he would influence other artists such as Kano Eitoku, Sen no Rikyu, and Hasagawa Tohaku (King & Chilvers, 2008, p. 189)…

Where sunlight is dusted of the countryside that, like chalked satin, is about to form wings, Fan Kuan drew that place. He drew a place that even the tallest souls, dwarfed by the mountains, were unable to reach, their temples still throbbing with the dismasked energy of a cloudy sky. In the foreground there are a total of four donkeys and one human traveler, possibly the artist himself, moving through mountainous terrain in China’s Shanxi Region. They resemble the shadows of a similar procession moving somewhere out of sight, the shadows of their souls traveling beside them unseen yet wholly more solid than the material world. The perspective of this painting puts the viewer in the eye of a deity, something bigger than the sum of its parts gazed down at its own beauty, the living earth looking into perfect enlightenment. The lack of pigment making up the mists at the base of the background and the streams in the middle ground imply that nothingness and oneness are at the heart of this sublime natural scene. The black ink used in this painting, the lack of ink used to create certain elements in this painting, and the perspective of this painting, which puts the viewer in a god-like position, reflect the beauty of nature and the values of the glorious marriage between Nature and Buddhism called the Tao.…

    Bodhisattvas

Both pieces of artwork I have chosen are Bodhisattvas. To understand these pieces it is important to have a slight understanding of the Buddhist religion and some of its ideals and practices. Buddhism datesback to the fifth century BCE. Siddhartha Gautama, son of a ruler of India, had foretold at his birth by seers that he would either become a Buddha or a great ruler (Hagen, 26). After a shelter upbringing that his father hoped would shape him into a leader like himself, Siddhartha left his home at the age of 29 and wandered in the forest meditating. It was at this point that he achieved enlightenment and thus became a Buddha. After this he began his teaching based on four noble truths (Hagen, 33). The entire religion is based off of principles of education, generosity, giving, and sacrifice. From these principles we derive the being called a Bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is an enlightened being who chooses not to reach nirvana in order that they maystay to help others on their path to achieving nirvana (Fuchuan, 15). This ultimate sacrifice goes to the core of their religion (Fredericks, 87).…

The style of the Japanese paintings that were produced by woodblock prints that was most popular between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries was called Ukiyo-e, a.k.a, (floating world). Ukiyo-e wasn’t the only style but it was the most prevalent of them all. Because of the popularity of these prints… they were sold in the small town shops and on the streets going at the minimum of the price of a bowl of noodles. These prints were bought by the elite and collected in albums or glued to their walls. The only participation the Ukiyo-e artist had in the production of their prints was painting them and selling the prints to publishers who reproduced them.…
