30 Hour Famine Experience
Part A
During the preparation of the 30 hour famine event, I had 3 roles. The first role was Juice Collector. I collected juice for the 30 hour famine and made a record about it. Since the beginning of April to the 20th, I collected juice and wrote the names of the people who donated and how many juice boxes they brought for the event. In addition, I also contributed 21 juices boxes. The second role was poster making. On April 15th, I designed a poster advertising the 30 hour famine and all the events that were going to be host during the 2 days. I posted the posters around the school. The third role was homeform visits. I wrote the script with Yuki on April 15th. We went through the upper A-wing promoting the event and asking for donations.
During the event, I was involved in the dessert sale on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st. Yuki and I did it during lunch at the cafeteria. On Thursday, we sold the cupcakes that I bought two days before. On Friday, we sold the mango panna cotta Yuki made.

The best way to learn about issues, it’s to actually be on the shoes of the other people, to actually fully comprehend everything that the individual is going through. So, by starving myself, I feel like I learned so much more than I could have ever with just sitting in a room and reading about it. I felt how hunger felt like and the stages, such as at the beginning being very hungry, after a couple of hours not feeling hungry, and by the end when food was offered, you would eat as much as you could. I could feel how poor people felt in a daily basis such as experiencing stomach aches, headaches, feeling dizzy, tired and hungry. They felt all that while they worked and study, and I feel that I would have never understood how they felt until I actually experienced

Growing Up Empty is a chilling account of the struggle to get enough to eat that confronts far too many Americans, especially children, in what is considered to be the wealthiest country in the world. In her book, Ms. Schwartz-Nobel tells the stories of men, women and children who are confronted with the tragedy of hunger in their lives. In a country where dieting is an art form, people still have a very difficult time believing that there are people in our great nation who cannot afford to eat. Tragically, the problem of hunger in America is still very misunderstood and has not made any major improvements over the past twenty years. Growing Up Empty was written as an update to her first book about hunger, Staving in the Shadow of Plenty which was written in the early 1980's. In Growing Up Empty, she explores the personal dimension of hunger (especially children) in the United States today and the different faces of hunger in each of her chapters; such as, Hunger and the Middle Class, Hunger and the Working Poor, Hunger and the Military, Hunger and the Homeless, and Hunger and the Immigrants and Refugees. I won't go into further detail about each of these chapters at this time, because their titles are pretty descriptive in themselves. This book is another cry for help and hopefully a means of creating a voice for the…

Many people when they eat don't think about all the people who are starving. It rarely crosses most people's minds but it's actually happening more than you could imagine. Everyday thousands of people that have fought for our country are starving as well as their families. There are few food pantries for homeless and starving people but one person changed that. Richard Snyek’s big idea was influenced by one veteran which changed Richard's whole life and thoughts about these vets starving. (Source #1)…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is portrayed as being an admirable, wealthy, kind, and genuinely impressive man. However, that being said, he is also portrayed as pretentious, deceptive, criminal, and most importantly to the plot, completely insatiable. Even though the novel’s narrator, Nick Carraway, heavily sympathizes with Gatsby, he has many character flaws that ultimately assure the failure of his “dream”, and even lead to his untimely demise.…

We sold tomato plants at the Farmer’s Market along with the children from this program, which had grown these plants on the Tuskegee University farm. While working with the children from the local YMCA, we had the children participate in arts and crafts projects, as well as games and other activities. I had the opportunity to spend one Wednesday at the Auburn University’s farm, which was the agency of three of my peers. While visiting their agency we had the chance to harvest vegetables and volunteer at the food…

When we think of hunger we all think of food, we never think of hunger as something else. In today’s world, many people suffer from hunger in the form of food, but food is not the only problem involving hunger. In Richard Wrights book “Black Boy” Richard, who is a young black boy, is faced with many different types of hunger, not only for food but also for things such as love, knowledge, education, or even engagement in social and political issues. Richard, in many instances, does physically need food to relieve his hunger, but comes to the conclusion that food isn’t as important as other problems in the world such as racism and segregation. Hunger is everywhere in the world and it doesn’t matter if your young or old, black or white, or man or woman, it attacks everyone in some shape or form.…

These laborers support their families by working long hours and meager wages. They have little or no formal education and virtually no chance of a better life without one. Spending time with the workers that I’ve befriended in my compound has made me fully aware of how blessed and fortunate I am to be able to go to school. I’m convinced I have a promising future. I’m grateful for it, but shamelessly there have been a few times when I have taken my studies for granted by not putting forth as much effort as I could have or by complaining about having to get up early for class. All that has changed though. Knowing the extreme sacrifices that the poor make to provide for their loved ones has changed my attitude and thinking. Sadly, I’ve witnessed individuals do whatever it takes to survive. It’s my hope that someday I can help people acquire the literacy skills needed for a better life either through charitable service or by making generous monetary contributions to organizations that support literacy. Nelson Mandela said it best, “Education is the most important weapon we have to change the world.” This realization drives me to appreciate the life I live, cherish the circumstances I have and to take advantage of the countless number of opportunities I’ll encounter in my academic journey so that I can be of service to others in my global…

When I finally got to my food the look on the lunch lady’s face as I grabbed my food was magnificent they looked so like they loved their job. For my choice of food, I picked cheesy breadstick with a packet of marinara sauce, romaine salad w/ dressing, hash brown stick, a pear, and a low -fat chocolate milk. As I walked back to my table students greeted me and shook my hand and a few came to sit with me. Before I dipped my bread stick into the little cup of marinara sauce I looked at it.The cheesy, baked flavorful and fluffy bread stick looked as if it was caramelized with butter. I broke the bread stick open to look at the cheese. The cheese looked so creamy and delicious I could not help myself I took a bit and the cheese melted in my mouth the bread was doughy but cooked enough to be just right. Next I took a bite into the pear. It was so juicy the citrus was so superior it was magnificent.…
