The world as we know it today is a “Global village”, unified by Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT’s). The term “Global village” was used by Marshall
McLuhan in his prediction and description of “an electronic nervous system (the media) rapidly integrating the planet” (Symes 1995). He further predicted that “events in one part of the world could be experienced from other parts in real-time, which is what human experience was like when we lived in small villages”.
According to Symes (1995); “due to media such as the telephone, television and more recently the personal computer and the 'Internet', we are increasingly linked together across the globe and this has enabled us to connect with people at the other side of the world as quickly as it takes us to contact and converse with those who inhabit the same physical space (i.e the people that live in the same village). According to McLuhan 'The electronic age' has sealed 'the entire human family into a single global tribe’

During the height of the technological revolution of the 21st century, there has been increased controversy on the costs and benefits of a technology-driven society. While it is easy to point out the over-excessive amount of time the public spends online, many fail to see the much more favorable aspects provided through a more interconnected world. Technology is helping amalgamate the world. The use of elements such as the internet and social media grant access to a vast expanse of information, establishing both a local and a global community. The concept of community is being transformed from a physical group of people to a virtual network as people all over the world have increasingly more access to connect with one another.…

Globalisation is a new concept that was developed in the 1980’s and is now a familiar term worldwide. A reason for this popularity could be due to the fast development of communication technologies, which have made impressive progress from the 1980s to the present day. Communication has developed from archaic hand written information to instant messaging i.e. Twitter, Facebook and BBMs. Through these mediums people from across the globe are able to communicate information instantly and in real time. The global bringing together of people, business and information, creates the word globalisation.…
