The Future of Commercial Shopping
“3D printing is the process of creating an object using a machine that puts down material layer by layer in three dimensions until the desired object is formed” . The Apple Company recently released its newest line of phones, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. The 5c intrigued many because of its unfamiliar design; the phone is plastic! Imagine the initiative Apple has just bombarded upon the commercial market. By creating a plastic phone, the next step would be to design a printable spec design for the intricate technology held inside the phone. The near future entails families with investment knacks being able to buy products online and print their own devices such as the future iPhones in their own homes.
A 3D printer, “create(s) 3D items using specifications sent from modeling software…they can build an object a layer at a time from super-heated plastic or polycarbonate” . The first time I ever encountered 3D printing was this past summer, July 2013 to be specific. One of my colleagues had just finished his first year at York College and came home for the summer with new toys. Viktor was an engineering major who also had a fascination and obsessive hobby with cars and extreme sports. While at college, Viktor had taken a computing class in which he had to use a software that could translate 2D designs into 3D and then print them out.
At first, I was very confused when Viktor told me about this invention. He referred to the machine as a 3D printer but never had I imagined of a machine that could produce whole objects. Viktor brought to work a piece he had created. Literally a one of a kind mechanism because Viktor had hand drawn the schematics for the object and printed it out using the 3D printer at York College. In my hand, I held a mount for a go pro that could easily be attached to a bike, helmet, etc. The fact that the three dimensional piece was resting on
