Safeguarding the heritage is important because people are proud to be associated with places, objects or traditions as they give them a sense of belonging. Heritage is of value to the people in the present and can be seen as an instrument that can be used to get both immaterial and material benefits and also contribute to a country’s economy and tourism.
Heritage is the full collection of our inherited traditions, objects and culture. According to Dr
Rodney Harrison, “objects of heritage are the things one pays attention to because they are still meaningful to them, not because they are great stories about the past but because we use them to tell stories about ourselves.” (http://www.open.edu)
Practices of heritage are customs and habits which are intangible but also inform us who we are and form the basis for a shared culture. According to F.P. Coetzee, (2010:6) wildlife, scenic parks, national monuments, historic buildings, books, works of art and artifacts sum up heritage.
