Part I: 1. Emily Grierson
Emily is the object of fascination in this story, she is extremely mysterious. She changes from vibrant to secretive throughout the story. She becomes a very pitiful person in the book because of the events that occurred with her father. She is the most interesting and the main focus. 2. Colonel Sartoris
Colonel Sartoris is Emily’s father, who is very controlling and still has a presence after his death. He leaves a lasting influence onto Emily and keeps her in his control still. We get many ideas about him throughout the story, but he is basically the stereotypical business, worried and controlling man. 3. Tobe
Tobe is Emily’s servant who is Emily’s only lifeline to the outside world. He cares for her and tends to her needs because of his job and doesn’t talk in clear sentences. 4. Judge Stevens
He is the mayor of Jefferson and is an extremely old man. He seems decent and handles the complaints about the smell emanating from the Grierson property. 5. Homer Barron
He is a foreman from the North and is very large with a dark complexion. He has a loud deep voice but light eyes. He is very demanding though and because of his good sense of humor he wins many admirers in Jefferson.

They attempted to make Miss Emily pay taxes.
