05.05 Mixtures and Solutions: Lab Report: Outline
Outline:
Title The title of the lab should be at the top of the lab report.
Background Information and Research 1. Paper chromatography is used to break down colors with using water and the way the colors separate. 2. Doctors can use it to test for alcohol in people’s blood.
People can also use it to check for pollutants in the water.
Pharmacists can use it to find out how much of each chemical is in each product. 3. I searched it up on google.
Purpose
The purpose of this test is to see what colors are in certain colors. We use chromatography to separate them/
Materials
* Candy with a colored coating, like Skittles® or M&Ms® (4 different colors) * Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol * Coffee filters (2) * Tall glasses or plastic cups (2) * Pencil * Ruler * Tape * Foil or paper plate * Table salt * Water * Toothpicks or cotton swabs (4) * Measuring cups/spoons * Clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle
Procedure
1. First I cut out the pieces of coffee filter. 2. I labeled each piece. 3. I put 4 drops of water on the plate then put a Skittle on each drop. 4. I took off the Skittles and colored each strip with each color. 5. I filled two cups up to ¼ inch. One with the saltwater mixture the other with rubbing alcohol. 6. I waited. 7. And waited. 8. And waited. 9. Finally I took out the strips.
Data and Observations * I thought that the colors would stay the same.

* This experiment took a really long time.
Discussion and Conclusion:
The first part of this section discusses the observations and results of the lab as well as any mistakes that may have been made (or what measures were taken to try to avoid mistakes) and what improvements, if any, you can think of for the procedure for the next time the lab will be conducted.
I results of this test were good. They indicated that the

To complete this lab, I first mixed the solvent solution consisting of the proper ratio of water, salt, and isopropyl alcohol in a Pyrex measuring cup. I then prepared my chromatography papers for 2 trials by drawing, with a pencil, the appropriate lines and labels. Using a toothpick, I added the color to the paper, and then repeated until the color was strong. I repeated this step several more times for the M&Ms as the color solution was not as strong as the food dyes. After the dyes were dry, I rolled the paper and added it to the pie plate, which contained a small amount of the prepared solvent. I then waited for the solution to…

Candy Chromatography is the method of analysis of separating and comparing dyes used in candies and food coloring. It is also a proven method to analyze candy and its complex structure, without having to taste it. These complex mixtures can be separated back into pure substances. To find out the ingredients of a favorite candy, chromatography would help to define every ingredient found in the candy sample. The word chromatography is derived from the two Greek words, “Chroma” meaning color and “graphic” meaning to write. Paper chromatography is the best method of separation used in candy chromatography. Paper chromatography is a technique that involves placing a small dot or line of sample solution onto a strip of chromatography paper.. The paper is placed in a jar containing a shallow layer of solvent and sealed. As the solvent rises through the paper, it meets the sample mixture, which starts to travel up the paper with the solvent. This paper is made of cellulose, a polar substance, and the compounds within the mixture travel farther if they are non-polar. More polar substances bond with the cellulose paper more quickly, and therefore do not travel as far.…

Chromatography (color writing) is a separation technique used to identify the components of a mixture and to purify a compound. The mixture dissolves in a solvent, the mobile phase, as it passes through an adsorbent material, the stationary phase. Mikhail Tswett developed this process to separate the pigments in green leaves. He dissolved the leaf extract in an organic solvent and let the solution run down through a vertical glass tube with chalk powder. A variety of pigments flowed through the column at different rates, while a series of bands appeared on the white chalk column…

Chromatography is a sophisticated method of separating and identifying mixtures of two or more compounds. The separation is accomplished by the distribution of the mixture between two phases: one that is stationary and one that is moving or mobile. Chromatography works on the principle that different compounds will have different solubilities and adsorption to the two phases, which will allow for their separation.…

Chromatography is a technique used to separate a mixture into its individual components. In this experiment, chromatography is done by using a thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate and filter paper. The word ‘chromatography’ itself means the separation of colours. However, nowadays, both coloured and colourless compound are used in chromatography by various methods.…
