Five Dangerous Things for Kids
1. Do you agree with Gever Tulley that the increasing safety regulations for children are limiting children’s opportunities to interact with the world around them? Why or why not?
• I do agree with Gever Tulley that increasing safety regulations for children does limit children’s opportunities to interact with the world around them. I say this because children are kept in a sheltered life until they are basically 15 years old which is when they really get to experience the world, by getting a learners permit and being able to drive a car. Otherwise children are pretty limited on what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do. They get to learn about the world by themselves with a parent supervising of course but it’s the idea of being able to explore it and feel what it’s like to do something like that on your own.
2. What can children learn from playing with fire?
• Children can learn that they can contain and control one of the world’s most important elements. They get to learn something new about this new and mysterious thing that is so powerful and has such an influence on life, but it is able to be contained and controlled by them. They feel powerful, and they become a little more independent. They learn how a fire is made, and what it takes to make a fire work. How you need intake, combustion, and exhaust to even start a fire.

3. Which of the “dangerous things” do you think would most beneficial for children? Why?
• From what Mr. Tulley said I think that the most beneficial dangerous things that you should let a child experience are playing with fire, throwing spears, and taking apart appliances. I think these three are the most important because, like I already said before, when playing with fire the child learns how it works and how they can contain and control one of lives greatest influences. I chose throwing spears because humans are made to throw objects, and when children throw things it helps develop parts of their brains that control many other important things. I also chose taking apart appliances because a child learns how these great machines and works of engineering are put together and how it actually takes a lot of mechanical work to make it work and run properly. And lastly I think that driving a car is necessary because it helps children understand that there are bigger things than the little life that they have, that they can do big things.
4. What role do you think parents should play in helping their children explore the world? How can parents protect their children and let them explore?

• I think parents should definitely supervise their children when allowing them to do some of these potentially dangerous things. Parents can let their children explore and be safe by giving them boundaries and guidelines that the child can follow. I mean you would not just hand a 5 years old a knife and tell them to have fun. Why? Because they wouldn’t know what to do, and it would cause them to hurt themselves. You would tell them exactly what to do and show them how to do it and allow them to try. You must trust in them, while being safe at the same time.
