Five Paragraph Essay

Women today are facing some of the same problems that those women of the 1800’s tried to overcome. Equality for women! Many women today find themselves in the position to make career changes due to family shifts, a lack of education, or a failing economy. Many women during the 20th century left behind their careers to be married and raise children. But in the 1970s divorce rates reached an all time high, leaving women to raise children on their own and go back into the work force. (Bianchi 2011) This caused emotional changes to the children along with the mothers. It also found many women returning to school pursuing careers that would help them secure jobs to support a family alone. In 2009, 74% of women working worked full time. (Bianchi 2011) These women worked 35 hours or more. Although they were working full time they found themselves in a lower pay bracket then their men co-workers. This could be due in part to not having the education necessary for advancement and being out of the work place for a period of time. Records show that only 30.3% of women have only a high school diploma. Along with not having the ability to be at work 24/7 women find themselves in a lower pay bracket. This leads into how the economy plays a vital role for women in the workplace. The economy plays a huge role in all workers in America. It is especially hard on women who are raising children on their own, when the economy is poor. They are subject to taking jobs that will make ends meet but are limited to hours they are able to work with children in their household. Many women do not have the necessary child care provisions available and find themselves relying on older siblings to care for their younger siblings. When the economy is good, women who have college degrees have a better chance of find jobs similar to the ones they had prior to having children. Women today find themselves in a position that seems poor. Women today like those of the early years of suffrage, have overcome many challenges. The family changes, lack of education, and failing economy will not hold a woman down! Women today have the ability to do what is necessary to support their families.

Between the years 1950 and 1970, wages increased significantly allowing most families to achieve the then ideal of a male-breadwinner, single income household. Beginning in the 1970s there was an enormous economic shift in the United States. Going from a manufacturing based economy to a service based economy there was a large change in the types of jobs now available to men as more opportunities for women and those with higher education. The level of education an individual received now largely dictated what type of job they were eligible for and women, now able to provide for themselves and their families relied less on the ideals of a breadwinner, male run household as they were given more opportunities both in education and the workforce. New family dynamics relied heavily on whether or…

Another example to how women’s roles changed in the 1920’s was women’s work. More and more women across the nation strived to be independent and have it all just like any man could. Women’s work was a controversial topic everywhere to depict where exactly women’s place in the work force may be. Typically working women of the twenty’s held a job in retail or clerical work and most popular, a secretary. Because women found such gratification from working independently, the role as a homemaker became less appealing. Until the 1920’s women weren’t given the option to become anything more than a homemaker and now that they do, they aren’t turning…

Many traveled to the west looking to make more money, and have independence. Women worked doing household duties like cooking, laundry, seamstresses. Some women did venture out to provide sexual services. Women were still struggling and dealing with being underpaid. Women during this period were uneducated and because they were always home maintaining the household duties, they were unskilled. The period between 1880’s and the 1900’s employers started hiring women and children so that they could cut costs because they could pay them much less than the men (Norton, 540). The number of women employees more than tripled. Women were now working more clerical jobs and menial positions. In 1908, there was the Muller vs. Oregon case which made a law stating that women couldn’t work over a certain number of hours because they needed to be home with their children (Norton, 543). This also prevented women from working in high physical demanding jobs. While having a law passed like this is great to make sure women are not overworked, this also shows how the roles of men and women in society and the family life are so different. Women basically must take on more than the men, but are never recognized for this. During the early 1900’s women still battled men. Some women worked in labor unions and the WTUL was founded to help support them in 1903. The WTUL fought for legislation on better hours,…

The roots of women’s poverty can be found in the way they are treated when they are in paid employment, and the situation in which they find themselves if they are not. Women who work full-time year-round earn only 71% of the average earnings of men working full-time. Wage gaps between women and men are even higher when hourly wage rates are compared. Most women don’t have pension plans at work, nor do most men, but women’s low wages make it almost impossible for them to save for retirement.…

One of the major reasons for the nuclear family no longer being the norm is that divorce rates have increased tremendously. It’s apparent that one in three marriages end in divorce, the rate going higher since between 1995 and 2010. This all then leads to the lone-parent families or re-constructed families. A big increase for divorce may be due to the fact that these days women are a lot more independent than they were for example thirty or forty years ago. Before, women were merely seen as housewives and mothers. Nothing more. Now however, women are much more likely to go into higher education, going to university and going into the same careers that men also go into. Furthermore, concentrating on education and careers first and marriage, children and all round family life much later on in life. Women these days are seen as much more liberated people, especially since they got the vote in 1918 for women over the age of 30 and women in general in 1928. Since the vote, women feel that they now can be financially independent on themselves without having the support of a male role in their lives.…
