5 Symbols of Life of Pi
Upper Half:
Tiger: The tiger is there to over come his fears and also to make a friend. The tiger is aggressive in the beginning of the movie but then begins to mellow out towards the end of it. They learn to become friends and work together throughout the whole movie. This happens when he feeds the tiger some meat while they are on the boat.

Birds: The birds in the story symbolize that God is always watching him. This means not to lose faith in God because he is guiding you every step of the way. God is guiding him to the destination he is trying to get to, without having problems on the way there. The birds help him get through the day to stay faithful to God when he wants to give up.

Boat: This is to help him survive from all things around him. The fish, the sea creatures, and the storms in the ocean. In the boat is a tiger and they learn how to survive with just each other to get to there destination. The boat kept them afloat above water with having a worry to sink or drown in the ocean.

Fish: The fish helped him get through his problems. Even though they are fish, they helped him solve his problems in so many ways. They did there own thing but caused Pi to think about his life and how to find solutions to his problems. This was helpful for him to get through life and his problems.

Ocean: The ocean was a big part in this because of storms that would cause Pi some problems. The ocean was full of problems because when your in a boat you might have that feeling you might sink. The ocean is a large mass of water that is capable of destroying Pi and his boat. But, luckily it did not happen because of the belief he had in god.

Divider:
Water/Boats: This is to project him from all of the dangerous things in the sea. When the storm hit hime at sea, it did not sink the boat. The boat stayed afloat and the tiger nor him were harmed during the storm. The boat was rocking but it did not break because of the belief Pi has in religion.

In How to Read Literature like a Professor, Foster also talks about allegories. The relationship between the tiger and Pi can be considered an allegory. A lot of the time spent on the boat is the classic fight of good vs. evil. Pi, seen as a naive child who could do no wrong, takes the role of the good character. Richard Parker represents the savage “dark side” and takes the role of evil. As the story progresses you see that each could not survive without the other. Richard Parker showed Pi that he could not have survived by being the sweet faultless boy who could not kill and eat a fish. Pi showed Richard Parker that he is inferior to Pi by training him and getting him food. The battle between the two at the beginning digressed to a mutual realization that good cannot always conquer evil and evil…

Pi begins to realize that he and Richard Parker are the only survivors of the sunken ship, and his survival mode takes a few days to kicks in. “I was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging on an oar, an adult tiger in front of me, sharks beneath me, a storm raging about me” (133). He knows he is alone with a 450-pound Bengal tiger, and that’s all he can think about. When survival mode kicks in, he begins to search the lifeboat for supplies and food that he would need in order to survive. Pi also realizes that he must make it clear to Richard Parker that he is the alpha male on the lifeboat in order for his life to be spared by the incredible cat. Pi is extremely alienated from all things on this lifeboat. Obviously he is alienated from his homeland while being stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He is also alienated from his family, seeing as they have all drowned from the ship sinking. He has never been stranded on a boat before. He has no idea what to do. Everything he has been accustomed to at his home on land no longer applied to his life now on the ocean. As Said had said, the sadness of being exiled could never be surmounted. Pi felt this sadness. “That second night at sea stands in my memory as one…

In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, Piscine Molitor Patel illustrates the suffering of a survivor following a major traumatic event. After a cargo ship carrying a full zoo and all of Pi’s family sinks, Pi is left with a few animals and his thoughts to keep him company. While at sea, his supplies dwindle and he has to resort to extreme measures. These measures come into full effect when Pi’s boat leads him to another survivor. The characters of Pi and the other survivor, a French man, portray how the need to survive can force these survivors to resort to savage actions.…

In the book 'Life of Pi' you find a young man, who grew up in a very religious world surrounded by animals of wisdom. The author goes into deep explanation of Pi's life, about how he grew up in a zoo and had a tough childhood. Pi develops a love for a higher power and starts to grasp the understanding of God, by learning three different religions. The religions were Islam,Christianity and Buddhism. After each of the teachers found that he was following multiple religions, each of them told him that he could only follow one. Pi continued to follow each of the religions and eventually studied zoology, shocker! Anyway in time soon Pi was on a boat with his parents journeying to Canada where the boat mystically crashed and began to sink. Pi escaped…

The film Life of Pi explores the concept that discoveries allow man to access to a higher plane of spiritual and self-understanding. Through Pi’s strong connection with his multi-religious and cultural background, Ang Lee demonstrates his struggle between pragmatism and faith when he is stranded at the Pacific. For instance, Pi is enforced to disobey a tenet of his Hindu faith and hammer the dorado to death so that his predatory companion has something to sustain on. Yet his childhood sincerity that animals have souls and his exceptional sympathy for them bring about a sense of remorse .The saturated green colour and the accompanying diegetic sound portrays fish’s vicious slaughter and his pained expression having to disregard his culture - the Indian vegetarianism. To overcome this trauma, Pi associates the sacrifice of the fish as a mean of saviour using the symbolism of the legends about the Vishnu god in Hinduism “Thank you Vishnu for coming in the form of a fish and saving our lives”. Evidently, Pi’s childhood exploration of divinity alters when he finds himself in the middle of the ocean. Ingenuity and tolerance lies beneath his attempt to balance the reality and faith rather than primarily favour one side or the other .This change indicates that he becomes increasingly aware of his capability from co-existing with Richard Parker, facing starvation and near extinction. Insightfully, the film proposes that religion or reality is not entirely contrasting through his successful manipulation of the twos to stay consistently…

I thought that this best fit into the plot of the story because imagine what it would’ve been like to be Pi, to manage surviving out of a sinking ship and knowing that all your family members have died in the ship as it sunk deep into the ocean and being stuck in a lifeboat with wild animals not knowing if or when they’re going to eat you. It must have been a…

In the novel Pi's actual name is Piscine Molitor Patel. His gets his name from the French word for pool, which specifically is the pool in which his friend Adirubasamy used to swim in. His name itself connects to the concept of water or ocean from the onset. This connection to water is used to exemplify the theme of surviving which could be a reason he is named Pi since he survived in an ocean for 227 days. Moving on Piscline's nickname is Pi which a mathematical expression for an irrational continuous number that starts with 3.14 and then continues with a repetition of words. This repetition basically exemplifies the repetition of Pi's routine to survive on the boat. Every day he woke with one goal which was to survive, and his name adds to the theme of persistence because with the repetition and persistence he might have not survived 227 days. Moreover the mathematical expression pi is used to calculate a circumference of a circle. A circle represents unity and I think the author used to this to add to theme of unity. On the boat Pi needed to befriend Richard Parker in order to survive and maybe without him he would have not survived. More specifically I think this connection to a circle represents the Chinese symbol for Yin and Yang which cannot exist without each other. Yin represents the negative side while Yang represents the positive, in connection to the positive represents Pi who is hopeful…

While he was in the lifeboat, he used praying for a couple of things. He used it to pass the time, but it also was used by him to keep his faith restored, and help him get through this really rough time in his life. He often prayed whenever something would go wrong, but at the same time he would just pray to pass some time, and talk to god. The last thing that occurred on the lifeboat that could have affected his mindset is his realization that his family was really gone. He started to understand this heart-wrenching fact in chapter 49, when he starts to decide to look through the rations of the lifeboat. His realization that they are dead causes him to have a decrease in hope of being found and he kicks into survival mode and doesn’t focus on being found but just staying alive. Pi was on the lifeboat for a very long time. 227 days to be exact. In that amount of time, many people tend to lose their sense of communication with others. It is typically highly unlikely that people can just come back into the normal world. However, when Pi returned, he was fully functioning, and was able to come back and do interviews, and later have a wife, children, and pets. That is pretty amazing when you think about it. Lastly, Pi is seen as the protagonist in the entire duration of the story That can prove that he had great determination and will to live because he came out a hero. He did a lot of really great things whilst on the…

    Life Of Pi Banned Essay

First off, Life of Pi teaches that anything is possible with God and constant perseverance. Pi manages to live on a twenty-six foot lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal tiger for a stunning 227 days! He can only do this by keeping the constant belief that God is present. While in India, Pi states, “Religion will save us” (Martel 27). He keeps this belief the entire voyage. For example, Pi states, “I practised religious rituals that I adapted to the circumstances. They brought me comfort; that is certain. But it was hard, oh, it was hard. Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love – but sometimes it was so hard to love” (Martel 208). Despite Pi’s low spirits, he continues to trust that God has a plan and will get him out of the current situation. Not only is Pi one with God, but also one with nature. He is deeply thankful for every sea animal he kills, using every part of the animal’s dead body. He even goes as far as drinking a dead sea turtle’s blood. Life of Pi is a passionate story that strongly reaffirms the existence of a God and for this reason, should not be…

Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, is an inspirational story of a young boy fighting for his life as a castaway with the company of a Bengal tiger. Through his religious beliefs and perseverance he is able to survive, but with great difficulty. In an allegorical sense, this story is brilliant. Pi recreates his story using animals to metaphorically represent the humans who were in his treacherous, archetypal journey because it appeals to everyone more than the frank and straightforward story. Attraction to this allegory proves the deeper point that life is meaningless without believing in the beauty and art of the quest at hand.…

    Life of Pi Symbolism

Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel. Piscine’s nickname is Pi and it has a symbolic relationship with the mathematical pi. Pi is sixteen when he is shipwrecked, and pi is also the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. Not only is the mathematical pi symbolic towards Pi, but it also provided him protection from school. Many of Pi’s classmates made fun of his full name and called him names such as “Pissing Patel”. When Pi transferred to a new school he took the first available opportunity to use his nick name, with “that Greek letter that looked like a shack … *Pi+ found refuge” (Martel, ). This nickname allowed him to find the protection from the bullying he would have got if he had used his actual name. The Greek letter symbolizes the roof the nickname has placed over Pi emotionally. Before the nickname was being used all his former classmates new him as only as…

Richard Parker gives Pi hope and keeps Pi sane and together throughout the journey in the Pacific Ocean. When Pi and Richard Parker were settling down in the ocean, Pi says “It was Richard Parker who calmed me down. It is the irony of this story that the one who scared me witless to start with was the very same who brought me peace, purpose, I dare say wholeness” (Martel 204). Richard Parker is capable of keeping Pi together. The presence of Richard Parker provides a peaceful environment for Pi, which keeps him together despite the fact that Pi lost his family at the shipwreck. Although a 450-pound Bengal tiger is a threat to the life of an individual, it can also bring comfort to someone who is all alone. If it weren’t for Richard Parker, Pi wouldn’t have survived the 227 day out at sea. Richard Parker is essential because he provides Pi with a companion and a tool to keep Pi’s mind off of the loss of his family and other issues that happen on the lifeboat.…

“I was giving up. I would have given up if a voice hadn't made itself heard in my heart. ‘I will not die. I refuse it. I will make it through this nightmare. I will beat the odds, as great as they are. I have survived so far, miraculously. Now i will turn miracle into routine. The amazing will be seen everyday. I will in all the hard work necessary. Yes, so long as god is with me, I will not die. Amen.’” (Martel, 186) Pi’s dedication to god gives him the hope he needs in order to survive his unfortunate predicament.…

Yann Martel wrote Life of Pi to create a specific relationship between the text and the reader. Martel uses diction, similies, metaphors, and symbols to the desired effect of making his readers believers in a greater power. Martel leaves the ending up for interpretation, so the readers can decide which story they believe, the one with the lion, or the one with his mother and the chef. Throughout the novel, we only hear about the story of the tiger, the hyena, the monkey, and the zebra, it is not until the last few chapters where we hear about a story that seems more realistic. Even though the story we hear at the end initially sounds like the more "realistic" story, Martel makes his readers second guess themselves. After reading the story…
