One generalized controversial example of the nature vs. nurture debate, and how each side believes, is explained by Starr Kang, “according to someone who believes nature determines behavior, although a child may have had wonderful life experiences and a stellar upbringing, if he is genetically predisposed to violent behavior, no amount of good parenting can alter that.”(Kang, n.d.)…
Whether nature or nurture has more of an influence over individual development is debatable and has been a common argument in the field of psychology for a long time. Nature refers to inherited traits and genes given to us at birth which we have no control over, and nurture refers to family, friends or society. The exchange between nature and nurture is dynamic and complex and both nature and nurture cause dynamic and continuous influence on development. The relationship between nature and nurture cannot be explained definitively and it is hard to determine which one influences human development more.…
The psychological debate of nature vs. nurture is one that has been considered and contradicted for many years. This debate is so controversial because although it is fact that genetic makeup does play a major role in developing a person, the nurture and environment in which a person is brought up in is also an important factor.…
The major debate concerning nature and nurture has been going on for decades and is still unresolved. Many people like to believe what we have inherited and our genes are what make us unique (the way we are and how we develop). Other people believe that the way we are raised and our experiences, that make us the way we are and how we grow. Physically the way we are built and look can be mainly due to nature. The genes that we inherit from our parents make the way of we look. For example, people say ‘Don’t you look like your mother?’ Genetic inheritance can define our eye colour (blue or hazel), whether we have straight or curly hair or how small we might…
Between nearly every developmental psychology category, there is a common question: Does nature or nurture have a larger impact on cognitive development? The answer is a matter of opinion, and varies from person to person, and from expert to expert. In regards to personal experience and opinion, it is my belief that, not only one of these influences development, but a combination of both nature and nurture is required to shape a person.…
Think of serial killer. Does he kill because it is in his genes? No matter what his parents did to raise him; he would have been a violent, serial killer no matter what. On the other hand, did his environment shape him to be a serial killer? Such as, his parent’s did not pay him enough attention, or he was abused as a child. Nature and nurture are factors that have come to be recognized as playing or interacting roles in development.…
For decades, nature versus nurture debate has been an ongoing argument among experts studying life span development. Those who believe that nature is the determining factor of development argue that genes determine an individual 's personality, attitudes, and behavior. The other side of the debate among experts is that nurture or experiences and environment have the most influence on development. Santrock states, "nature refers to an organism 's biological inheritance, nurture to its environmental experiences" (Santrock, 2007, p. 17). This paper will take the debate a little further by examining whether nature or nurture has more of an influence on children raised…
With nature versus nurture being a widely discussed debate it is easy to tie into different situations. "The debate within psychology is concerned with the extent to which aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited (i.e. genetic) or acquired (i.e. learned) characteristics” (McLeod). There is two sides to the debate nature…
As there is always an argument based on this topic; nature vs nurture plays a big role towards the development of the child. For instance nurture will; affect the way the invidividual acts when in the classroom this is because the students inherits traits that pertain to education where student can do well in some subjects but in other subjects they cant as it is there weakest link. As well, the students inherit certain psychological traits which are when they become shy therefore they aren’t very assertive or confidence. This is where nurture comes into play because students who are shy by nature can be nurtured where the are taught to become aggressive not to shout at others and start attacking them but just not be shy this will then change there development and the person they were .…
Fast-growing understanding of the human genome has recently made it clear that both sides are partly right. Nature endows us with inborn abilities and traits; nurture takes these genetic tendencies and moulds them as we learn and mature. End of story, right? Nope. The "nature vs. nurture" debate still rages on, as scientist fight over how much of whom we are is shaped by genes and how much by the environment. In this assignment we will discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the language development of an individual. It will include a variety of different language theorists such as; Noam Chomsky (1951), Steven Pinker (1994) and B.F. Skinner (1957). We will discuss who they were and what their theories were, and also we will discuss a twin study in language development.…
Nature vs nurture the nature nurture argument has been around since 1869, it is a term in psychology related to weather nature which is our genes we inherit from our parents (DNA) or is it nurture- the environment where we live that most impact on psychological development. Do we behave the way we do because it is imprinted in our DNA or is it our environment reflecting on our behaviour. Some scientist argue on the nature side, that your characteristics and personality are purely based on your genetic predispositions, then other scientist on the nurture side believe it comes from the environment we live and grow up in and through experience.…
Let’s talk about the whole controversy between Nature vs. Nurture. Nature is based on DNA. Many people believe that it is DNA that decides on how humans will behave, what occupations they will have, and what their personalities will be like. Others, on the other hand, believe that it is the environment, or nurture, that decides on occupation, behavior, and personality. Although nature does decide on what color hair you have, what eye color you have, and what your height is, nurture has the greatest impact on humans and influences people the most to different kinds of activities, meet different people, and the difference between what is right and wrong.…
The nature versus nurture issue has been around for ages, and scholars have still not concluded which of the two has a greater effect on a person. Nature, referring to…
Nature – Nurture is a debate in Psychology that can be seen everywhere, today. Going through public schooling, you see the results of the nature-nurture issue all too much and with both of my parents working in the public school system, I see the results even more in students they work with. I can think of so many young people off the top of my head that are victims of not enough nurturing. A lot of students today act out, misbehave and cry out for attention because they don’t get the nurturing they deserve at home. There are also students who may never discover their true potential because they miss out on the nurturing that most people receive. There is a family in my church who took in five foster children who were brothers and sisters. These kids started riding the bus to church and it was very clear that they had missed out on a great deal of nurturing in their lives. After time went on, they were put in the foster system and this family in our church decided to take all five of the kids in and eventually adopted them. With a little nurturing, these children transformed. Their appearance, manners, grades and so many other things improved. The only thing these children were missing was nurturing in their home.…
