This Sunday, I watched a Chinese movie, the Golden Era, at AMC Empire 25 in New York City. Directed by Shaohua Li, with one of the most famous Chinese actresses Wei Tang, the movie received high attention from the public. It tells the life story of Xiao Hong, one of Chinese most well-known essayists and novelists. Her literary works and personal life reflect the progressive and critical thinking, which is not frequently seen during the 1930s in China.

As a super fan of Wei Tang and a reader of Xiao Hong’s work, I was so excited to watch this movie in New York, a city so far away from my home. Though the movie itself did not match my high expectation and received overwhelming criticism, I still felt touched to see a movie in such a giant and unfamiliar city. I still remember when I watched Gone Girl, the first time watching movie in NYC, I could not understand every sentence. Particularly, it felt so lonely when everyone around me kept laughing on an English slang, which I could not understand its humor.

However, watching Chinese movie here was totally a different experience. Watching a Chinese movie in a strange land creates a sense of national identity and a sense of belonging. Therefore, I began to consider how to promote Chinese movies in a foreign city. First of all, I would like to hold special film events in NYC. By inventing Chinese most famous directors, actors and actresses to attend events or to promote their latest films, it would obviously attract many Chinese people in NYC, especially the youth, and it would catch the general attention in the city. I noticed that NYC has already had New York Chinese Film Festival, while it is still a big challenge to promote Chinese movies and even the festival per se. Besides, I would like to use social media to promote Chinese films. Because of social media censorship in China, the filmmakers, actors and actresses seldom promote their film movies on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. Therefore it is very difficult to reach people living in the places outside the Mainland China. Social media platforms are very effective paths for well-made films to be known by people in NYC.

    It tells the stories of the changes of Asian American roles in cinema and the stereotypes typically viewed in past Hollywood films. Asian Americans were first expected to act like the stereotypes about them in films. Those stereotypes would be things like not knowing English, speaking in deep Asian accents, being the supporting “sidekick” roles, and other things like that. It wasn’t until later on that Asian American actors, male and female, starred in leading roles in Hollywood movies and even TV series. Hollywood directors would also shift Asian culture to what they think Asian culture is. Asians that moved to America and became actors were unable to portray what real Asian culture is because they had to do what they were told. The Asian population, however, were fascinated by the leading white men and women in the Hollywood films back then. They never cared for watching the supporting Asian roles and always wanted to see the white actors and idolized them. Later on, with the Asian American actor, Bruce Lee, Hollywood films influenced the general audience to believe that all Asians knew kung fu or karate. This newfound stereotype of Asian American actors brought the influence of Hollywood film directors wanting them to engage in fighting scenes. This is portrayed in the Bruce Lee movies, the Rush Hour series, Jackie Chan movies, and more. Movies like Better Luck Tomorrow didn’t go with the influence of Asian American stereotypes in film, and caused controversies and change on what is expected from Asian American actors. This documentary showed the challenges women faced as well. Many Asian American actresses were casted roles not only as “fresh-off-the-boat” Asians that had deep accents and little to no knowledge of English, but also as prostitutes and mistresses as well in the past.
