5th Grade Volleyball Team
Volleyball and kids happen to be two of my favorite things, and I was fortunate enough to experience this past spring. I took on the role of coaching a 5th grade volleyball team. I volunteered to spend every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and occasional weekends with this crazy group of 5th grade girls. Safe to say I did not fully know what I was getting myself into, but I do not regret my decision to coach one bit. The first day of practice was crazy. The gym was full of smiling, screaming, dancing 5th grade girls. At that moment I thought how am I going to deal with this all season. Throughout the season the girls grew on me. I got to know more about them and all the 5th grade drama. The best part was getting to know their parents and having …show more content…

Their short attention spans, and inability to be quiet when I was talking really tested me. Coaching gave me a sense of maturity and responsibility. One girl on my team has major family issues and would often come to practice crying. Helping her each practice and seeing her happiness increase and confidence go up throughout the season was so rewarding. Although the season is over, my relationships with these girls certainly is not. When I see these girls around I see them get a huge smile on their face that matches mine. It is so great to see them so happy to see me, that confirms that all the time spent with them meant something to them. I will snapchat them and get updated on their lives, mostly who their boyfriend of that week is. They have told me all about middle school and say how excited they are to see me come present to their classes. My favorite location to see them is at my own varsity volleyball games. This is where I get to show them everything I had been teaching them all summer. This pushes me to lead by example. If I made a mistake I remember they are in the stands watching me, watching to see how I react. I love that they push me to be

For the past four years, I’ve been captain of my all-star cheerleading team. My teammates are a diverse group of girls, ranging from ten to seventeen years old. Working with a large age group has made me a more patient person. It takes more time and effort to answer a ten-year-old’s question, than a question from a fifteen or sixteen-year-old. I also must be willing to take my time when explaining parts of routines, because everyone learns and understands at different speeds and levels. Along with this patience, I have developed an ability to comfort people. Younger team members often become frustrated by challenging tumbling passes and stunts, when this happens I intervene. I comfort them by providing much needed aid, not solving the problem…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

As a child, I was outgoing and talkative, but in 4th grade, I became more self-conscious and shy. That summer, I signed up for The Oak Ridge Otters Summer Swim Team. I was nervous to join because I knew no one. It felt like everyone was judging me for being the new member. A group of teens, maybe in middle school at the time, noticed that I looked lonely and called me over. They talked to me and introduced kids my age. They made me feel less nervous and excited to continue to swim. This was the first team that showed sports wasn’t about the sport itself, but also growing friendship and memories. The middle schoolers also taught me to include others and not to ignore someone for being aloof.…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

Later in my high school career, now bigger and stronger, I tried out for an elite summer softball team. My new coach was unlike any coach I had had before. He would scream in my face, and point out my flaws in front of the entire team. However, most importantly, he challenged me to grow as a person and to confront my biggest fear, which is failure. He pushed me to my limits, making me want to quit and wishing I had never played the game. Despite these challenges, I persevered and became mentally and physically…

I represented my medical school volleyball team at the annual All-India competition for four years. In order to excel in the game, I went through rigorous practice sessions where I observed experienced players, learned every aspect of the game and practiced it diligently. Along the way, I learned to work under pressure, realized the importance of thorough analysis, hard work and persistence, and developed effective teamwork skills and leadership qualities. I believe that these skills would help me to become a detail-oriented pediatrician who does thorough analysis, can keep calm under high-pressure situations, and can be a supportive team member as well as lead the team when…

Unfortunately, I did not realize that until I saw my bad habits and poor choices mimicked by the players. I was under the belief that was exempt from the rules. Instead of being an example, I showed up late, wore what I wanted, and ate goldfish and chewed on sunflower seeds on the field. The young kids looked up to me, and wanted to be like me. Failing to set a positive example for the kids, I needed to humble myself and lead, instead of feeling that I was above it all. None of the older coaches called out my failure to lead by example, so I was left to find my error on my own. After seeing it in the 11 year olds, it was quite necessary to step out of my comfort zone and conform to their rules. That moment became one of the defining moments of my young life. I led by example by humbling myself and accepting my role to serve others. Not only did I act as a leader, but my attitude caused me to glow and explode with a noticeable…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

First off, last year when I played, Coach Willis was very strict with our group of players and with these girls he has been much more lenient with them. As the time got closer to the season the girls didn’t seem dedicated. Practice was lackadaisical, most of the girls didn’t want to be there and Coach Willis didn’t push the issue. As I mentioned before, these girls willingly signed that contract to play at UTPB. They know they are getting paid to play basketball and most of them have a careless mindset. As a former player this really ticks me off, I remember how hard I fought for myself to be in their position and those girls are taking it for granted. I wish I could just show them that in a couple years they’re going to look back and regret not giving their most. I know as from a coaching aspect it is almost impossible to coach passion. Passion comes from within, the passion I have for this sport is uncontrollably the reason I want to have basketball involved in the rest of my…
