This is an important thing to think about. When students are not allowed to pick their own topic the assignment can become monotonous for the students, but when students are allowed to pick their topic it can lead to trouble. In Ethical Issues Raised by Students’ Personal Writing, Dan Morgan talks about how the topics his students chose lead him to some hard ethical issues.
