"Self discovery is a bitch…but it's a necessary evil." Eventually, everyone goes through a time in their life in which they try to grasp the truth of who they really are. Jung, a psychologist, describes this time as the "process of individuation" in which we go through three stages when three parallel phenomena occur: separation of child from family, separation of society from nature, and separation of ego from consciousness. The latter is the process of self-discovery. Rollo May, another psychologist, explains this separation of ego from unconscious in four stages as well as the transition from being unfree to being free. Both men's ideas are well demonstrated in John Knowles World War II novel, A Separate Peace through the development of Gene. Similar to most adolescents, Gene struggles through the stages of consciousness and ultimately gains the freedom to control his own life as his ego moves out of his unconscious and he becomes an adult.…

This past years old I started to compare my life with the life’s to the life of my friends and started to wonder why were they having more success than what I was having. Why were they earning more? Why do they have a better job? Why, why, why, all this questions coming to me. All of them comparing my life with theirs. They were buying luxury cars, traveling, shopping, living on Austin downtown high rises. And me? Well I was living a normal life with a job that I don’t like, driving a car that I don’t like ( cant complain either), on a house that is not bad at all, but its not one of those expensive apartments with an amazing view of the Colorado River. After a lot of thinking there were two things I realized that made…

The Four Noble Truths, Ariya-sacca, form the essence of the Buddha’s very first sermon which was delivered to the five ascetics in a deer park in Benares, after he had become enlightened. This sermon was called Dharmachakra Sutra which translates as “setting in motion the wheel of Dharma”, which were the Buddha’s teachings. The Four Noble Truths are called truths because, as well as being believed, they can be experienced and directly understood as part of our daily life too.…

Throughout my life I have been faced with many different challenges that has helped me become the person that I am today. My life started out pretty simple. For eight years I was an only child, and viewed by my grandparents as their pride and joy. Then my brother was born, my mom and dad separated, and I started getting into trouble in school, at home and eventually with the law. At this point in my life, I grew up fast and started forming the person that I have become based on my elders and other influential people I was surrounded by.…

Joseph Campbell, a well know mythologist states in “the Power of Myth” that “a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something greater than oneself” (Campbell 151). Campbell also indicates that there are two types of hero deeds. One type is a physical deed, “in which the hero performs a courageous act in battle or saves a life” (Campbell 151). The second is a spiritual deed, “in which the hero learns to experience the supernatural range of human spiritual life and then comes back with a message” (Campbell 152). In his story “The way of the peaceful Warrior”, Dan Millman tells us about his experience with a white bearded man known as Socrates who takes him on many adventures and gives him knowledge on life. Although the two stories are different they are alike in many ways. Campbell introduces us to the hero’s journey and the step required on becoming a hero. In Dan Millman’s, story we see how those steps of the hero’s journey such as departure, fulfillment and return are portrayed.…

I found a video my mom had filmed of me crossing the wooden bridge. After watching it, I realized that those bridges were kind of like life. Both of the bridges got you to your end destination, but it was up to you to choose which one to take. One bridge is sturdy, safe, and predictable and the other is rickety, risky, and unpredictable. I could have picked the safe bridge, but then I probably won’t have a story to tell or have a video to watch. In life you make the choice on which path you take just like the bridges. If you pick the safe, predictable path you’ll miss out on a lot of things. You’ll never put yourself out there. You’ll never ask that girl or guy you like out because you don’t want your heart broken or never try to publish the novel you wrote because of fear of rejection. I realized that night that life is too short to always take the safe path. When I’m at the end of life I don’t want to think back on the life I lived and have a million what ifs. Sometimes you have to face your fears and cross that rickety wooden…

Buddhism, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, is the belief that suffering is inherent in life and that one can be liberated from it by mental and moral self-purification. Buddhists believe that salvation is reaching Nirvana, the ultimate state of release and freedom from rebirths. In order to reach Nirvana, one must wholly follow the Noble Eightfold Path and accept the Four Noble Truths. The four noble truths are the existence of suffering, the cause of suffering, the end of suffering, and the end of pain. As it is stated in the Tripitaka, the holy book of Buddhism, a person can earn their way out of the cycle of reincarnation and reach Nirvana through good works. Christians believe that we are not saved by our works, rather God’s…
