Social media is also known as Web 2.0. In other words, it involves websites where information flows two ways. Within the realms of social media, this means users conversing within the website network. Social media is being blamed for the Internet becoming as big as it is right now. Sure, it was probably destined to become popular, but social media has attracted people of all levels of intelligence, technical ability, and age. The popularity of social media is also the reason why the use of the Internet is so high, as many researchers claim that overall hours spend on the Internet would drop by over 20% if all social media were removed from the Internet tomorrow.
1 - Facebook
They famously have over 1 billion profiles, and have around 750,000 unique visitors every month. This is a massive amount and is the reason why Facebook is the most popular social media website of all time. The network has spread across the globe, and almost all of the developed countries in the world have a large number of people on Facebook. It is a website where you set up a profile about yourself and then connect with other people via their profiles. You are able to use its security measures to stop people contacting you or seeing your private information.
2 - Twitter
This website has less than a quarter of a billion profiles, and has around 250,000 unique visitors every month. It is a micro blogging website, but has very small blog posts. It allows each member to send small messages the size of mobile phone text messages into the network. The users may set up a profile with their photo(s) on, and may put a quote under their profile. This network became very popular quite quickly, and people still argue as to the reasons why it is so popular.
3 - YouTube
This one is in a controversial position number three. If you were to go from country to country then the amount of profiles would differ wildly. Yet, in total the network gets over 1 billion unique visits per month, which is more than even Facebook gets. And, six billion hours of video are watched every month. This is a network where you may upload a video, or watch a video, and you are only restricted by decency rules and the law. It is quite addictive, as many of the videos have a comedy appeal or shock value appeal.
4 - LinkedIn
This is a website that allows professional persons to make contact with other professionals. It is all about making contact with other businesses in order to gain some sort of promotional or business advantage. It is used by many as a way of advertising their services or business. It has 110,000,000 unique visitors per month, and is mainly populated with people who are working for a company, by company managers, company owners, and freelance workers.
5 - Pinterest
This is the social media network that surprised a lot of people when it was discovered that over 90% of the users are female. It has around 85,500,000 unique visitors every month. It is a network where you may display images and website page elements on your profile. It is a way of showing off the things that you like that you have found online. It allows you to show things that "interest" you.
6 - MySpace
This network has over 70,500,000 unique visitors every month, and takes number six in the popularity list, even though its user base dropped off massively when Facebook became popular. Many of the visits are coming from the USA, as many other countries either never got onboard with MySpace, or simply deleted their accounts when they found Facebook. It is somewhat of a simpler and more personalized version of Facebook.
7 - Google+
This is the Facebook competitor that Google set up. It never really threatened Facebook and has now taken its place as a social media network that web masters use in order to gain SEO benefits for their website. It has 65,000,000 unique visitors per month, and does have a lot of profiles but has not really posed a big threat to the top five social media networks. It works in a similar way to Facebook, where you have to create a profile about yourself and then connect with other people. It also has an authorship function and circles function that Facebook does not have, and has a "Page" function which is very similar to the Facebook Fan Page function.
