Learning Unit 1 Writing Assignment
1. What kind of manager is Manny?
Manny is a first-line manager; he is responsible for directing employees. According to Fundamentals of Management, “First-line managers are often called supervisors, team leaders, coaches, shift managers, or unit coordinators” (6). Manny is overseeing Eminem, because he is keeping track of when Eminem clocks in on time and making sure he is doing his job. In the video 8 mile Manny tells Eminem, “You’ve been doing much better.” Manny is making sure that Eminem is improving at his job and acknowledging to him that he has noticed, this is something a first-line manager would do. Eminem replies with a “thanks” at the end of the conversation as an appreciation for Manny noticing.
2. What management function is Manny fulfilling when he considers giving Jimmy extra shifts?
I think Manny is using a leading and planning management functions. Manny is using leading management functions, because when he tells Eminem that he is doing better he is motivating him. When a manager acknowledges that you are doing a good job it motivates you to keep doing a better job. Manny is also effectively communicating with Eminem needing extra shifts. By offering Eminem the extra shift he is resolving Eminem’s problem of needing additional shifts. According to Fundamentals of Management, in the leading management function “managers motivate employees” and “select the most effective communication channel” (9). I also believe that Manny is fulfilling the planning management function. By replacing a shift that needed to be replaced, Manny is planning ahead. As a first-line manager Manny needs to plan ahead and manage his employees coordinately. Planning in Fundamentals of management is described as “defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities” (8). Manny is coordinating shifts appropriately to those whom want it.
