90/10 Principle
The 90/10 Principle by Stephen Covey Discover the 90/10 Principle: It will change your life. The 90/10 principle is incredible! Very few know and apply this principle. The Result? Millions of people are suffering undeserved stress, trials, problems, and heartache. They never seem to be a success in life. Bad days follow bad days. Terrible things seem to be constantly happening. Theirs is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships. Worry consumes time, anger ruins friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest. Friends are lost. Life is a bore and often seems cruel. Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged. You can be different! Understand and apply the 90/10 principle. It will change your life!

What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane may be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%! How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction. Don’t let people fool you; You can control how you react!

Let’s use an example. You’re eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the coffee cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize them for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your

Lee proves that young children instinctively try to calm others down when they are upset but as they are not capable of as much as adults are, they often stick to talking. She also shows that if kids feel someone has made a mistake, they will instinctively correct them, instead of thinking through the consequences first as adults often do. Moreover, the author demonstrates that, when told what to do, children naturally become angry and react negatively. In contrast, adults may still become annoyed, but they stop and think about how to handle the situation instead of reacting on…

Most people like to think that human beings possess free will, at least with regard to a wide range of actions. In contrast, however, some believe that certain people lack the aspect of free will. Many great theorists have contended that the reason some people may, indeed, lack free will is not so much due to the determined nature of their choices and behavior, but rather due to the fact that their behavior is not responsive to their choices in such…

Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

From reading the text, I quickly identified with the author Hill Harper’s The Conversation. In the 17th chapter Harper talks about Anger, Forgiveness, and Learning to let go. One of my most freighting fears is the thought of someone dying and having a grudge, or being mad. In my genealogy we have always struggled with forgiving and being in control.[1] My personal issues are that I struggle with are, as Hill Harper writes, “Maybe you grew up with a father who was controlling. You know that doesn’t mean that all men are controlling. Still you keep your guard up and behave in a way that lets the men in your life know that you’re just not having it, that they will not and cannot control you. Maybe your mother is critical of you, but that doesn’t mean all women will be critical. Still, you keep your guard up and put every woman in your life on notice: you will not and cannot tolerate their criticism and lash out as a result. In personal life, the roles are switched, my mother is controlling and my father is more critical. As a child growing I remember my mother, always being in control and my father always-sitting back being the critical one. A…

I think that sometimes when life gets busy the first thing I do is well on what isn’t working. There isn’t enough time to accomplish everything I need to do. I feel like I am spinning out of control trying to find the ever elusive balance and continue to drop every single ball I am juggling in the process. I somehow think that in the hope of being everything I am letting down from the people all around me. For me it becomes a spiral that I can’t control. Negativity never breeds anything but contempt. Nothing good can come from getting down on myself. These feeling won’t just go away when I wave a magic wand. It takes a complete overhaul of mindset my ability to see each individual tree in the forest, it means I need to slow down and celebrate what matters. So that’s what I am trying to do , focus on the little things, the everyday successes that I know are right in front of me. It requires me to look through a much different lens, one of gratitude. I have amazing people in my life. My family is a unbelievable support and they are my heart. I have colleagues and friends near and far that I can go to for almost anything I need. A multitude of opportunities present themselves daily to learn, connect, and grow. I have the ability to embrace opportunities to wonder, ask questions, and try new things. I am grateful.…

    Learning to Be Depressed

Throughout life we all have different experiences whether they be positive or negative. Our hope is that if an experience is negatively affecting us we ourselves have an ability to change it. Generally, most people expect that the outcome of an event is dependent on their actions and that if they behave a certain way, a certain desirable outcome will be produced. This leads us to believe that we have control over what happens to us. This idea is all based on our beliefs of control and power in previous experiences and using them in our everyday life. If we lack personal power or experienced a lack of control in the past, we are then more likely to feel helplessness when approaching new experiences. Martin Seligman, a behavioral psychologist, theorized that our perceptions of power and control are learned from experience (Seligman, 1975). Seligman believed that if someone continually tries to exert force on a situation and fails repeatedly, the individual will stop attempting to exert control all together and may generalize the perception of lack of control to all future situations. He studied this behavioral pattern with dogs as subjects at the University of Pennsylvania (Seligman, 1975).…

For example, an illustration is about effect of sadness and anger on judgments of blame. Blame attribution in sad people is associated with situational factor whereas in angry people is related to other people within the environment (Han, Lerner and Keltner, 2007). Fourth, matching constraint, effect of emotions on judgment and its appraisal must be complied with each other. To illustrate this principle is focusing on risk assessment cases in the research. For example, fear is dimensions in uncertainty and lack of individual control in which judgments of risk should be influenced. However, fear should not influence judgments of fairness (Han, Lerner and Keltner, 2007). Final principle is deactivating conditions, in that, decisions are effected…

    Anger and Temper

As people, we have a habit of overreacting to almost everything. This little quirk is usually heightened in kids and teenagers, causing lots and lots of problems. Most kids don't like to listen to their authority and having a bad temper does not help them as far as getting along with others. Most children have problems in school about “not playing well with others”, and while this is not such a big deal with most people, some take it a bit too far and resort to physical violence. This is a major setback when you are in school because aside from the obvious consequences (i.e. getting suspended) you also have many minor problems that might stem from one situation in which you let anger get the best of you. I have seen kids lose all of their friends just because they decided to fight with someone. If you fight with the wrong person, everyone might decide not to like you anymore. You might become labeled a bully and get a negative reputation which follows you into highschool and college. Getting rid of a bad reputation is one of the hardest things to accomplish majorly due to the fact that kids have big mouths and like to talk about other kids. The most obvious thing that stands out to me when I think of consequences from fighting is my parents. I know that if my parents ever got a call that I hit someone, I would be getting in A LOT of trouble at home. Doing things like that follow you places. You might only get into a fight once but that fight will come up again and again until the day you die. Just ask the Will Smith. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared and said “Youre moving with your Auntie and Uncle in Bel Air.” Dont be Will Smith.…
