Just like Carlos wanted to give Luis a better life by migrating to the US a lot of hispanics do the same not because they want to cause any harm or bad but to work for their family and give their children the best that they can. Carlos wanted to provide for his son and for Luis to have a better future and for him to be someone in life. Luis had to struggle with seeing his father struggle with his job and see how his father would be at risk when it came to even driving illegally. Luis had a girlfriend which she had family that was all into the cholo gang thing and they were influencing Luis to become a member of their gang. This was causing value contradictions in Luis, it was contradicting everything his father had worked so hard for. For a kid that has to grow up listening to spanish at home and listening to their parents talk about their culture and doing things the way they would in Mexico and then them going out into the world listening to a whole different language and friends doing things different can be confusing and change their socialization. I understand how Luis felt not being able to do anything to help his father get money, get a driver's license and have the privileges other kids
