He modeled and instructed them to understand the profound responsibility of leadership and how the consequences of their decisions and actions affected not only the lives of Soldiers, but also their families, the enemy and non-combatants. He further taught these emerging leaders how to apply this knowledge across established competencies to achieve mission success through various training exercises and professional development sessions, focusing on preparing them to serve as leaders in the Global War on Terrorism. Under his leadership, his Company won several awards and consistently ranked among the best in all major categories that Cadet Companies were rated. Later, while serving as the Director of Cadet Programs, Lieutenant Colonel Gardner was responsible for the management and operation of 115 intercollegiate clubs and teams which further enhanced the development of Cadets by providing organized, comprehensive, and diverse programs. His efforts in this capacity were instrumental in leading the organization to its best cash position in over 12 years, thereby enabling them to provide more opportunities to develop Cadets into leaders of character. He expertly managed the team to defend and maintain the Pacific LandWarNet (PLWN), and he stood up the first ever USARPAC forward TNOSC as part of the Theater Security Cooperation Program exercise Cobra Gold in Thailand. He was critical to transforming the PLWN from a federation of garrison networks to a single expeditionary theater network in support of a four-star warfighting headquarters. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner’s team also excelled in the successful completion of 6 major USARPAC exercises, hundreds of real-world computer network defense response actions, and an extremely successful Command Cyber Readiness
