The plane crash, the storm, the heat, the unmanageable fear of the beast, and the lack of food and water. These are the conditions these boys were living in during their time on the island. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, these boys have killed. Do you really think these seven to twelve year old children intentionally committed murder? The horrible conditions drove them to an unstable state of mind and greatly affected the decisions they made. Prosecutors have argued that they purposefully murdered Simon and Piggy, fully aware of what they were doing and who they were killing. This is absolutely false. Due to the environmental conditions the boys experienced, and the traumatic events they faced,

The fear was so strong that it altered the way they thought. In fact, it caused the boys to do things without thinking. “Fear, an emotion that evolved to deal with danger, causes an automatic, rapid protective response that occurs without the need for conscious thought.” (National Institute of Mental Health) Have you ever been incredibly scared? Did it affect the way you thought or reacted? People tend to do violent things when fear starts to overwhelm them. For example, George Zimmerman killed a 17-year old boy, Trayvon Martin, out of fear for his life. “He argued that Martin had thrown the first punch in the confrontation and that Zimmerman, fearing he was at risk of bodily harm or even loss of his life, had a right to protect himself.” ( Historic U.S. Events) Likewise, the boys killed Simon out of fear for their own lives. They thought he was the beast coming to kill them, which is why they should not be punished for Simon’s murder. In Ralph’s testimony, he said, “The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly. The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. The beast stumbled into the horseshoe.” (Golding) The boys were so fired up with the chanting, and the overwhelming fear that was within each one of them, that they reacted accordingly. Simon was murdered merely out of instinct don’t you …show more content…
These conditions prevented the boys from distinguishing fantasy from reality, right from wrong. After the horrible plane crash, the ferocious storm, the overwhelming fear, and the lack of nutrition, would you expect that all of these would have no effect on the boys? Does the weak evidence the prosecution has presented really make you want to punish these boys? The killings of Simon and Piggy were preceded by unbelievable confusion and fear. How could you possibly hold them accountable for

These boys are terrified by a beast that they think lurks on the island. Piggy makes an observation and says “That little ‘un-” gasped Piggy-” him with the mark on his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?”(46). After this the boy's fears increase. With this the boys represent Hobbes idea’s on fear which is that “Everyone lives in constant fear. Because of this fear, no one is really free..”. With the constant fear the boys have they don’t know what to do on the island so they do the opposite of what they are told. There is no adult figure there to tell them that there is no beast and there is nothing to fear. This shows how the political system that Ralph had formed was not being supported or followed through by the other boys on the island. Another way the boys didn’t help Ralph was when they would go off and hunt with Jack or when they decided to join Jack’s tribe because he said it would be more fun than staying with Ralph, who they initially deemed chief of the island. The littluns don’t understand that Ralph is the right person to listen to since they don’t understand the consequences of not having shelter, smoke, and water.…

Simon, in document E, is trying to figure out what exactly the beast is, “Then he sets off, weak and staggering, to tell the other boys that the beast is human.” When he goes to tell the boys, he is mistaken for the best. The boys then brutally kill him, “There are no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws.” Stated in document F. As Simon tries to tell the boys that the beast is human, he instead gets mistaken for the beast and gets murdered by the true, human beast. The human boys with “teeth and claws” symbolize the savagery of human nature in the form of the “beast”.…

Piggy is tries to be helpful in many cases while Simon mainly keeps to himself. One of the ways that Piggy is helpful is when the groups split up he comes up with the idea to make another fire. When Piggy came up with this idea Simon thought that is was best if he went off on his own to look for the “beast.” While asthma and seizures are both things that the two boys struggle with they are two different types of things. Asthma holds Piggy back from the group many times like when he doesn’t get to go swimming or when he can’t quite keep up with the group. Seizures make Simon feel like an outcast so he tries to not be around others when he has them. The final aspect that contrasts the boys is their ways of death. The Rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist ( Golding 131. ) While Piggy was killed on purpose by Roger, Simon was killed more by accident. He was coming out of the forest at night trying to tell the boys that the beast wasn’t real however, he scared the boys because of his ragged look so they fought Simon thinking that he was the…

As the story progressed, the line that draws the boundaries between the world of instinct and savagery contrast to the world of reasoning and civilization begins to fade. The death of Simon was meant to show the loss of peace and order as he was the only one on the island who was not afraid of “the beast” and was able to live with his mind at peace and think rationally based on reason, not instinct. I felt that the cruel fate that Simon had to endure was unnecessary brutal but I do see why the author incorporated it to get his point across, although I was a bit disturbed. I felt that the way Simon died was unrealistically brutal and I understand that it was meant to display the instinctive and animalistic behaviour of the boys when they were…

Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,…

Isolation from society results in the boys learning to make the same mistakes as mankind. They learn to commit evil deeds as they permanently damage animals, each other, and nature. Although the tropical island provides food, water, and adventure for the boys, some undermine their surroundings and focus on violence and bloodlust. The scar from the crash will disappear in time, yet the children, through their inhumane actions, leave a deeper mark on the island. Through displaying the horrors of evil in humanity, no one remains safe; therefore, nature does not stand a chance against the malevolent instincts of…

Throughout this time, we see the boys acting as savages, or “being primitive or uncivilized.” The days of playing and innocence are over, as the island slowly gets corrupted by Jacks savagery. One of the first crimes that took place in Lord of the Flies is when the group of boys kills Simon. Everyone was so focused on the Hunters reenacting the pig hunt that they didn’t notice a dark shadow until it was close to them. Being in a crazed frenzy, Simon was not recognized, and killed as if he were the beast. “The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws.” (Golding,152-153) Multiple arguments could be made in defense of the group, but it was a spur of the moment action. The vast majority of the boys were most likely scared out of their wits, thinking that the beast was coming to get them. The next unforgettable crime was Piggy’s death, or murder. In events leading up to Piggy’s demise, Jack’s tribe ambushes Piggy in order to steal his ‘specs.’ “ ’I got the conch. I’m going to that Jack Merridew an’ tell him I am.’ “ (Golding 171) But what none of the boys realized is that in confronting Jack, something far worse could occur. Piggy was a brave soul to have stood up for what he believed, but surely he did not expect to die that way. Piggy was murdered gruesomely; hit off of a cliff with a boulder. What could cause a child to become so savage that he murdered his fellow peers? Although it was a horrible…

Since the beginning of time fear has made men do things he is not proud of. This is no different in the book Lord of the Flies. The children on the island, particularly Jack's tribe, have made many poor choices out of fear. This is similar to how fear affects the outcome of certain choices that are made in society today. In Lord of the Flies it clearly shows how fear led to the death of Simon, the death of Piggy, and how fear can lead to savagery and chaos whether on a deserted island or in every day life.…

All the boys deserted Ralph, Piggy, and Simon and chose Jack’s tribe. While the two tribes are separated at the opposite sides of the island they still run into each other with conflicts in hand. Jack’s tribe did not have fire so they snuck up on Ralph's tribe and attacked them while sleeping. They stole Piggy’s glasses and left them with nothing against the spine-chilling night, “We’ve had a fight with the others” (167). Another issue was with the group of hunters that made their first kill when hunting while in charge of keeping the fire going. All the hunters that stayed back decided to leave the fire and to go kill the pig. With no one there to keep the fire going, it extinguished. Meanwhile, on the beach Ralph is looking out to sea and spies a thin line of smoke move across the sea, everyone jumped for joy, but then realized there was no smoke signal to catch the ship's attention. Returning from the forest, the hunters yelling out excitedly, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood” (69). Ralph realizes that he can not do everything and feels the heat of being…

“The rock struck piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee”, and he fell off the cliff and died as the conch “exploded into a thousand white fragments.” (181) Piggy died after trying to help everyone and did nothing really wrong or against anyone. Piggy died an innocent death just like Simon because he had done nothing wrong but stand up for himself. He had tried to help Ralph all the way until he died and had helped Ralph realize what was happening. Thoughtful and smart, Simon was dragged along by the littluns to get the fruit “they could not reach”(56), then Simon “passed the fruit back down to the endless, outstretched hands”(56) of the children. Simon is nice and thoughtful, he had done nothing wrong and was just helping out the littluns and Ralph. Simon is like a mocking bird because he did nothing, but just trying to help out as much as he could, yet he still died innocently when the hunters mistook him as the beast. After trying to get Piggy's specs back and Piggys death, samneric are left with no say against Jack yelling,”what d’you…

Some people on this island just don't realize that they've got to put first things first if they ever want to be rescued. Today we could have been saved by a passing ship, had Jack and his stupid hunters paid attention to the rescue fire. You see, it's their job to maintain and watch the fire. Unfortunately, Jack and his hunters picked today of all days to neglect the fire and when a ship passed by the island, there was no signal to be seen because the fire was dead. When Jack and the hunters returned from their hunt, they were chanting a frightening chant and carrying a dead pig. Ralph reprimanded Jack for his lack of responsibility, and Jack got mad but he apologized. When I complained about the hunters' immaturity, Jack hit me real hard and broke one of the lenses of my…

First of all, the littlluns fears the beast, which causes them to have nightmares and to be scared of going near the jungle. To demonstrate this argument, Golding quotes, "Even the sounds of nightmare from the other shelters no longer reached him, for he was back to where came from, feeding the ponies with sugar over the garden wall" (Golding 98). So what Golding is saying here is that Ralph is dreaming about feeding ponies, but he is awakened by Sam and Eric talking about how scared they are from the beast. Thus, this quote clearly shows that Sam and Eric have lost their innocence, because the definition of innocence is when a person has an absence of some knowledge. Before the twins had come to the island, they were missing the knowledge of the beast. Later on in the story, they gain knowledge about fear and the beast, which is technically a loss of innocence. They think that the beast is some sort of monster that is on the island, but they don’t know that it does not exist which is a childish thing. This also shows that they just lost their innocence. Second of all, the beast brings evil onto the island and influences the boys commit evil acts. Such as, in chapter eight, Jack killing an innocent sow not for food, but to cut its head off and place it on a stick for food for the beast. Therefore, this event clearly shows that Jack is committing an evil…

Look at agoraphobia. It is the fear of going outside. James Mcintosh wrote “intense fear of any situation where escape may be difficult.” Fearing this can destroy someone if they allow it to get to them. Fear is a powerful thing that can destroy someone even if that fear is minuscule as this. Not that many people has this phobia, “about 1.8 million American adults”, but the people that do have it are terrified of outside. Their families are even effected by this fear. It consumes them as well as they fear for their relative. People face this fear and it will destroy them if they allow it to continue.…
