A Career As A Social Worker

Social work is full of complex challenges, but one of the most beneficial and rewarding fields to work in. Growing up I lived in many different environments and situations, between separated biological parents, grandparents, being homeless, and foster care I have experienced many walks of life. Unfortunately, drugs consumed my mother's life, we became homeless when I was very young. I watched as my mom struggled to clean her life up, going to different cities she took me to California leaving behind my brother and sister with their fathers. After a year of going between different places, my mom was arrested and I was put into child haven. Watching as I no longer had contact with family, and no longer having my mom. To be a social worker, it is important to have empathy, social perceptiveness, and the critical thinking in order to help provide self awareness and self help in others. In order to be an effective social worker empathy is very important in the field. It allows someone to understand others difficulties. Even though one may not have experienced it themselves, one can understand the client. I feel as though with my background experience it has taught me to see the different views and perspectives of others and allows me to have that empathy and relate to others. Social perceptiveness is another highly important trait strength that I can contribute to the field of social work. Just as I am aware of what causes my reactions I am able to help others find that knowledge of reaction in themselves as well. Knowing why someone reacts the way they do, whether it is in their emotions or their actions seeing those reactions and being able to critically evaluate them is an extremely important trait for all fields of social
I will help others in finding the best outcome in their lives possible. Being a social worker does not mean solving all the problems for someone it means helping them find solutions on their own that they love, that they are comfortable with. I choose social work because it is the one mental health profession that can help all people. I would like to pursue counseling with my degree, it allows me to help save the world one person at a time. Graduate studies are going to give me a better understanding of the development of psychology, as well as the experience and guidance that comes from hands on hours. The world is constantly changing and the practice is always developing new knowledge about humans that we never knew before, I know that with a degree in social work I will always have to keep learning new things for the rest of my life and I find that wonderful.
