A Career As An Occupational Therapist
In my last year of high school, I began contemplating a career that could be fulfilling for me, as well as others. I have always had the desire to help others in whatever capacity I was able. I was privileged to participate in several activities and programs which gave me the insight and opportunity to learn the value of helping others. My grandfather battled leukemia, and as a result, lost a leg in his journey. He soon realized that the day-to-day tasks he took for granted were now much more difficult to accomplish. Taking a bath, getting dressed, moving about in his home, and getting into bed were just a few of the tasks he had to learn a new approach to complete. Watching the Occupational Therapist bring my grandfather back to a new “normal” was when I knew that I wanted to pursue a career as …show more content…

I want to be a part of a degree and career that is so encouraging and uplifting to people in need and has the ability to change lives. Occupational therapy is the perfect career for me to showcase my ability to do so. When looking for places to begin my journey as an Occupational Therapist, many thoughts ran through my mind. She guided the field of occupational therapy to understand the importance of supportive care, concerned with behavioral aspects that impact the patient’s response to the rehabilitation. In considering which path to take in graduate school, I immediately had a flashback to when I would travel with my mother and care for my younger siblings while she worked as a counselor to provide assistance with psychosocial support and mental health care to communities, families and individuals in conflict and post-conflict situations. Having the opportunity to observe her and the organization change so many people’s lives while providing them with hope, planted the seed of nurturing and counseling in my heart. Since middle school I have devoted my time to taking on every opportunity that comes my way to volunteer with helping my community better the lives of our youths.…

I believe this assignment will be practical to remember in my career as it just illustrates how important occupational therapy practitioners need to be client-centered. If I had to think of activity plans without talking to the client, I would have thought of activities to improve his range of motion. Even though this is a topic that needs improving, it was not what he wanted to work on first. He wanted to learn adaptions to be able to toilet independently, so he could do that kind of stuff while later improving his strength and range of motion. This helped me understand that even if you see a problem that you would think would need immediate attention, it may not be the what the client sees as an instant…

One of my all time favorite quotes and one I live by is, “broken crayons still color.” There has been a point in everyone’s life where they have felt broken and second guessed whether they could go on or not. However, everyone deserves to better themselves and overcome any limitation or barrier in their way or holding them back. Being an Occupational Therapist means being patient, encouraging, open-minded, and optimistic. People tend to take things for granted as we get so wrapped up in our surroundings and the people around us. If we all would take a step back and imagined how different our lives would be if we couldn’t eat on our own, get dressed on our own, or even bathe alone. My grandmother, who raised my sisters and I, has endured multiple strokes. Before, she gained back full motion, speech, and occupation through therapy. After her last stroke, about six months ago, she has struggled to gain back her full strength, and…

The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…

“Get off the couch and stop looking at a television screen” is what I tell my three younger siblings everyday. As the older brother, I take responsibility for my siblings’ health and well-being. Instead of playing sports, my siblings prefer staying indoors texting on their phones or playing video games. It concerns me that not only my siblings but also children and even adults nowadays are not motivated enough to get outside, exercise, or participate in physical activities. Coincidentally, pushing my ideals about health and exercise on my younger brothers and sister would eventually shape my career path in physical therapy. I prefer a career that requires being active and working with people on a daily basis than having a desk job and staring…
