Jimmy Butler, a 6’7 forward for the Chicago Bulls, has been with the Bulls for all of his five years in the NBA, out of Marquette University. Every year Butler has improved drastically, since only averaging 2.6 points per game in his rookie season. More recently, in the 2015-2016 season, Butler averaged over 20 points per game and even posted 53 points in one game, marking the first time a Chicago Bull has done this since Michael Jordan did in 1996. Furthermore, in the 2015-2016 season, Butler was nominated as an eastern conference all-star, for the second time in his career.
"I don't like the look of you. You gotta go."
Those were the last words Jimmy Butler says he remembers his mother saying to him before, according to his recollection, she kicked him to the curb. He was 13 years old. There was no family to run to. No place to call home. No money in his pocket. Most kids his age are concerned with school, sports, girls. Butler was just trying to survive. Alone.
"I don't like the look of you. You gotta go¨ were the final words that Jimmy Butler’s mother said to him. His mother kicked him out of the house when he was only 13 years old. Whereas other kids his age are able to focus on their academics, extracurricular activities and social lives, Butler had to fight to survive. His coach at Marquette, Buzz Williams, always told him to take everything one day at a time."That's literally what I live by," Butler said. "One day at a time. The NBA is a goal of mine. But I'm not there yet. I can't lose my focus.”
Butler’s college coach, Buzz Williams, advised Butler to “take everything one day at a time. That's literally what I live by" "One day at a time. The NBA is a goal of mine. But I'm not there yet. I can't lose my focus, said Butler, in an interview with Chad Ford of ESPN.com.
Leslie's mother, Michelle Lambert, paused at first. She had four kids of her own from her first husband, who had died. Her new husband had brought three children of his own with him. Money was tight. The word around Tomball was that Jimmy was trouble. Her new husband finally told the kids that Jimmy could stay, but only for one or two nights at a time. But each night when Butler would come to stay, a different kid would say, "Tonight's my night to have Jimmy stay."
Butler bounced around from friends house to friend's house, until finally finding a home in his friend Leslie’s house. Michelle Lambert, Leslie’s mother, already had seven other kids to take care of, but Michelle still allowed Butler to stay and he soon became a role model for the other children.
"I told him my kids looked up to him," Lambert said.
"He had to stay out of trouble. Work hard in school. He had to set an example. And you know what? Jimmy did it. Anything I asked him to do, he did it without asking questions."
