A Comparative Analysis Of 'The Interlopers By Sadie O' Hara
Compare and Contrast
By: Sadie O’Hara

A short story is usually written to teach a lesson. Short stories can be anywhere from a few paragraphs to a few pages long, but they aren’t as lengthy as a book. Two examples of a short story are “The Interlopers,” a story about long useless arguments that should be set aside instead of wasting time on them. Another example of a short story is “The Story of an Hour,” which is about a woman with heart problems learning of her husband’s death, and then realizing he is alive. Now you may be wondering how these two have anything in common, but I think the moral is similar. In “The Interlopers,” the men have been wasting their lives fighting and trying to kill each other, when they could be prospering.

Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption follows the story of Louie Zamperini, a rebellious child who grew up to become one of the fastest runners of the 1930s. He competed as an Olympic track runner in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The future was looking bright for Zamperini before World War II began, which resulted in the Olympics being cancelled and Louie being drafted into the Army Air Forces as a bombardier. Midway through 1943, his B-24 crash landed in the Pacific Ocean. For weeks, Louie and two other men drifted westward across a seemingly endless ocean, accompanied by a pack of sharks and surviving on scraps of bird and fish meat and the occasional rainfall. Eventually, he arrived in Japanese…

For a short story to be effective, it must be able to produce high levels of intensity, emotion and drama. To do this, it must convey a great deal of information in a short space of time. As a result, the short story usually leaves a great deal of its content open to interpretation and examination by the reader. Also, the denouements of short stories frequently remain inconclusive and unfulfilled. Together, these attributes add to the action and intriguing character of this genre of literature.…

Short stories require different styles and features, than regular novels. Single characters, shortened plots, and a conflict with resolution, are some of the key features that make a successful short story. With having a single character, it lets the writer develop their background, which gives the reader much needed description to create an understanding, or relationship with the character. The shortened plot, with a build up to the conflict and resolution, grips the reader, and makes them feel the suspense of the author’s story.…

According to Edgar Alan Poe, a short story should be like a window into someone else’s life, in other words it doesn’t really matter what happened before and it doesn’t matter what’s going to happen after. The authors of the short stories I have read in class this year, using only that window, have made me feel sorry for the characters and angry towards the resentment the rest of the community shows them because they are different from others. Reading White & witchetty, the Dolls House and Josie has made me question my own values and beliefs.…

Using stories to get a point across can be beneficial. Sometimes it may even be recommended in certain cases. For example the usage of fables can be used to teach children valuable lessons. But that’s not the case in Carl Sagan’s “Dragon in my Garage.” Trying to imitate the usage of fables, Sagan writes the tale of a dragon in his garage in order to explain some of the fallacies that people are faced with on a daily basis. But trying to teach multiple lessons through one short story can be problematic, as we see happening in Sagan’s story. Michael Shermer, author of Why People Believe Weird Things, on the other hand, was able to get his point across effortlessly by fitting one example to each of the fallacies, rather than fitting all of the…

Short stories are a way to escape everyday life without taking all day or week to read the story. They are mainly based on fictional characters and can vary in length. As defined by Dictionary of Literary Terms, a short story is “a relatively short narrative which is designed to produce a single dominant effect and which contains the element of drama. A short story concentrates on a single character in a single situation at a single moment” (343). Like novels, short stories are made up of different plot points such as an exposition, raising action, climax, denouement, and resolution; although, not all short stories accommodate all of these plot points. When a plot point is left out of the story, it tends to leave the…

Some say that short stories are pointless, who could possibly write a story in just 55 words and it make sense? Well it has been done and it works quite well! It takes an author of great skill to be able to put so much information into such a small piece of writing, to be able to fit in all the necessities. These authors have their own genre of writing. Some of these amazing authors include Lydia Davis, Margaret Atwood, and Terry L. Tilton. These are just a few of the outstanding brains behind some of the best short stories ever written. Not only do these authors use the lack of words in such a way to make the reader more involved in the outcome of the story, they also use fewer words to be more dramatic, and to leave you with questions.…
