Since they entered the snack food market in 1919, Hostess introduced their classic Hostess CupCake and their famous Twinkies, which were invented in 1930 and became their best-selling snack cake. Less than a century later, Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2004. Hostess managed to fend off the temptation to sell and emerged from bankruptcy in 2007. However, in an article detailing Hostess’s recent past Steven Bertoni explains, “After over a decade of failing health that saw two bankruptcies and five different CEOs, Hostess finally died on Nov. 16, 2012” (Bertoni, 2015). Since the time Hostess introduced itself to the world almost 100 years ago, they’ve fluctuated between success and hardships. With their past bankruptcy…
False Belief Tasks . According to your text, “the ‘gold standard’ that researchers use to demonstrate understanding of belief is success on tasks that require understanding of one’s own or another person’s false belief ” (Siegler, 2005, pg. 318). Young children often fail false belief tasks. This finding has been interpreted in a number of different ways. Give an original example of a false belief task that could be given to a three-year-old (do not use an example from the text). Describe an interpretation of children’s poor performance on false belief tasks. Provide at least two factors that can enhance the performance of students on false belief tasks. How can preschool teachers utilize their knowledge of student performance on these tasks as well as their knowledge of performance enhancers when planning for instruction?…

Stanley Milgram had advertised his experiment on a newspaper to get their attention as to needing male participants. From here, being informed that there will be two males as one would be a teacher and one would be a learner – even though there would be confederate. The participant would not necessarily be told everything about the experiment as this was the whole point of Milgram experiment to see how far a male participant would obey instructions and to see if ethics had been…
In total, 96 children with an equal number of boys and girls, aged between 3 and 6 years, took part in the experiment (Oates, 2012). Every child took part individually but had been allocated to one of four groups, each with a different condition:…
A male child moved to a new neighborhood and plays all alone, then walks up a female child the same age whom has a full conversation with him and proceeds to play with the male child. As a child, you hang out with the opposite gender more than the same gender making communication between children easy. When children are on the playground together they don't find it hard to talk to the opposite-gender in fact, they see it as if they were talking to a child of the same gender. As a child it…

It was through my school that I learned to stray away from my favorite toys, such as remote control cars and Legos, and go for the “girly things” like Barbie dolls and princess dress up clothes. I recall one time in kindergarten, when I was only five or six; my teacher was giving out small things (like candy and small toys) to the children that had not gotten into trouble that week. I got called up and he gave me a small package of off-brand Legos. I remember feeling awkward, because I associated that as being a “boy” toy, so I took it back later and asked for a “girl” toy. Of course that was thirteen years ago so I cannot recall each and every detail, but I remember thinking back to that later and wondering why I got so upset over it being a toy meant for the opposite gender, because I would have ultimately liked the Legos more. This is why Lois Gould’s experiment really resonated with me. I immediately thought, “Would I have been happier if I were raised…
Gender bias through a child’s toy can have a large effect on their behavior. Children model the behavior of adults around them, something from TV, or even a toy. A young boy has the imagination to see his action figure in…
In Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development, an 11 year old likely is still largely in the concrete operational stage while slowly developing into the formal operational stage. In this stage, children become more logical, flexible, and organized. Newly formed cognitive maps allow them to relate separate pieces of information at once. Maps become more organized and drawn to scale as children give clearer instruction and direction. During Halloween, Greg creates a detailed map explaining the route he and his friend Rowley would take. His map was so precise that his brother could easily read it. Greg’s behavior throughout the film is not consistent. In fact, his development is on time because around age 11, adolescents begin to enter the formal operational stage. Here, they develop the ability for abstract, systematic thinking. Hypothetic-deductive reasoning allows them to predict consequences and use propositional thought to evaluate thoughts and understand logic without real-world examples. Greg originally used inductive logic and was unable to use his principles to predict outcomes. He didn’t think about how ignoring Rowley’s feelings, threatening older kids, or how terrorizing children would end. In the end, his develops and begins using deductive logic. He is finally able to use a general principle to guide his actions. His belief in friendship over popularity leads him to falsely admit he ate the playground cheese, causing his schoolmates to run. Through internal questioning and reflection, Greg was able to come up with a new logical rule. One particularly important factor in the development of cognitive thought is schooling. As a sixth grader, he has been exposed to complex problems…
Recent history boldly notes the [comment3] protests and political unrest surrounding the Vietnam Conflict during the 1960s and 70s. However, equally important in this era are the women who pushed for gender role reevaluation and publicly rebelled against the established social norm of a woman 's "place." Although Alice Munro may not have been burning her bra on the courthouse steps, threads of a feminist influence can be found in "Boys and Girls." Munro 's main character, a girl probably modeled after Munro 's own childhood experiences on an Ontario farm, faces her awakening body and the challenge of developing her social identity in a man 's world. "The girl," an unnamed character, acts as a universal symbol for the initiation of a girl into womanhood. Through first-person narrative, Munro shoes the girl 's views of her budding femininity and social identity by describing the girl 's conceptions of her parents ' work, her parallel to the wild mare Flora, and the "mysterious alterations" (Munro 474) in her personal nightly stories.…
Kohlberg argued that “children pass through a series of stages” in fully understanding the concept of gender (qtd. in Martin and Little 1427). Children show sex-typed preferences at an early age as their understanding of gender as a social category relates to their acquisition of the anatomy of sex. Even two and three year old children have developed a mild understanding of gender stereotypes such as those which associate sex with activities (Martin and Little 1429). A research was led by Martin and Little which involved measuring children’s understanding of gender using gender labeling, consistency, and stability tasks (1429). Many conclusions were drawn from their experiment as they discovered, upon analyzing matrices and statistics of the sample, that as children got older, they are less likely to think that both girls and boys could use certain toys and that “even the youngest children could reliably label and discriminate the sexes, understood group membership, understood the situational constancy of gender…and had some stereotype knowledge of toys and clothing” (1434). This delineates how childhood development is affected by gender identity and stereotypes as children learn to associate toys and clothing to sexes as well as distinguish the sexes. A developmental progression was found in Martin and Halverson’s research as children learned to…
Becoming a gendered body child is very important in society. There comes a time in life when you get the opportunity to choose if the life you have been given is right for you. At times people have said you were born the way you are and others say no it’s a choice. Inside this article an experiment has been done to compare and gather information on how children develop, and their actions, along with body training, to help mold them into their assigned genders. The social problem that is being investigated throughout this article is quite complex to me. Basically they have chosen over 100 students, and 7 teachers that are divided into 5 different classes. Although some are in the same general area were their parents work, they may live, or go to church. The actual experiment is studying how the student’s behavior changes from hyper activity’s to strict ones. As well as how they interact with the others students during play time, dress up, groups activities, etc. They boys versus the girls, the boys verses the boys, and the popular verses the non-popular. Loud to the quite however you would like to look at it. Everything and everyone has been watched, for 6-8 months with detailed recordings and observation. Martin, Karin A. (1998). Becoming a gendered body: Practices of preschools. American Sociological Review, 63(4), p. 494-511.…
Summer in Nigeria signifies the season when there is no rainfall. It is the season where most events and expeditions are organized. In summer, people express themselves more freely and confidently. Children can be seen jumping around in excitement and flexing their tender muscles on the playground and outside. Adults and youths too do several things in summer. They organize concerts and go to the beach in summer for fun and excitement. Going to the beach in summer can be fun with people dressed in colorful swimming trunks and walking in the sun.…
