A Direct Personal Style Analysis
The author mentions about "A Direct and Personal Style" he explained that the preacher should be personal to address. I'm not really sure about this concept, it is contradicting to what I learned from the past. I was taught, using the pronoun "you" in sermon may offend the listener. Because of that, we should always use "we" to avoid conflict with the listeners. Furthermore, he added "Therefore, a sermon should not sound like a thesis read to a congregation. It should sound like lively conversation where the speaker is thinking in the act of speaking" I agree that sermon shouldn't be read. Also, let us be careful in making the sermon lively like having a conversation with the listeners that they might offend. Sometimes the person you think

Firoozeh Dumas' essay, "The F-Word," addresses the very relatable struggle every person with an ethnic name faces in the American culture. Her prime example being herself, Dumas humorously and realistically depicts the trauma a person endures from constantly having to educate people about your name. She also uses the names of her siblings to provide a comparison of the names' meaning in Persian versus their American mispronunciations. Dumas' seamless use of analogies, word choice and quotations assists in her goal of making the reader understand and sympathize with her frustration.…

In chapter one of “Lectures To My Students” Spurgeon is debating the point that men seeking to become ministers must first be saved. His emphasis in this chapter that men need to be examine by themselves to ensure that they belong to Christ and are one of his children. He also points outs that all ministers preacher or pastor must first be a example to what they are preaching. They must practice what they preach. When you look at chapter 3 Spurgeon points out that a pastor must be a man who stays in constant prayer daily. He ought to pray more than the people he is leading. He further argues that a devoted prayer life will empower the pastor's sermons as well as their delivery. The pastor that does not pray over his work because it shows his arrogance, for he elevates his thoughts without seeing the need to appeal to God, but his prayer should be that of one who seeking and searching for something to say to the people because he realizes that its not him who speaks to the people but God who uses him as a willing vessel to speak to his own people. Chapter 4 examines how as pastors along with our congregation should pray in front of other people. Spurgeon believes that we should pray with our hearts and from our hearts and not pray from a written script. God alone must be the object, and Scripture must be quoted accurately. Spurgeon finishes this chapter offering practical advice for the length, current, etc. of public prayers. In chapter 5 Spurgeon explains what a sermon should have in its contents. He points out that they should be made up of solid doctrine and be well throughout. The doctrine should coincide with biblical text itself, while all ways revealing the gospel. Most importantly pastors must seek to grow within their spiritual knowledge, having better understanding the truth, so they can effectively grow, encourage, empower and motivate the…

Based on the information presented in the survey, it is clear to see that my personal thinking style is highest for my affiliative style and approach. This is primarily because I like to ensure that I have support whenever I make my way in a test whether it is on an academic level or on a personal basis. My ability to forge these relationships with my cohorts is something that I value very much as I’m a strong believer that you learn more from the environments around you as opposed to a single textbook or other method of self-improvement or educational medium.…

As revealed by my personal Life Styles Inventory (Figure 1), my primary thinking style and back-up thinking style were Conventional (4 o’clock position) and Affiliative (2 o’clock position) respectively. There are many ways in which both the Conventional thinking style and Affiliative thinking style manifest in my life and work, none of which were all that evident until I explored my personal Life Styles Inventory. As stated in the Life Styles Inventory, my primary thinking style, the Conventional Style “measures our tendency to act in a conforming way…representing a preoccupation with adhering to rules and established procedures, maintaining a low profile, and blending in with our particular environment to avoid calling attention to ourselves.” (LSI, Conventional Style) Even though I do not see myself as a complete conformist, I do tend to fall in line in the workplace so that I can learn as much as I can from the proven and effective system that I am working within. In the past, if I found myself working in an environment that has not been proven or effective I would not stick around too long because I felt that I had nothing to gain from the job or experience. So, in that situation I would have to agree that the Conventional Style would be one of my primary thinking styles. My back up thinking style of Affiliative is said to “measure our degree of commitment to forming and sustaining satisfying relationships…affiliative people seek out, establish, value, and maintain close associations with others, and appreciate people and enjoy being in the company of others.” (LSI, Affiliative Style) Even though I do see myself as a people person, I was surprised to see the Affiliative Style as my backup personal thinking style. I do understand and appreciate the importance of what healthy relationships bring in the workforce, but I am not sure that it is as important to me as the Life Styles…

The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) presents a series of questions in the areas of personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships and then collates participant responses into a circumplex identifying 12 specific patterns or styles of thinking, behaving and interacting on a personal, management and leadership level--representing the essence of an individual's effectiveness. The circumplex provides a visual description of an individual's thinking and behavior and then compares results with those of other individuals who have taken the inventory in order to create self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to create awareness of constructive behavior. The results plotted on the circumplex are divided into areas defined by higher order and lower order needs of satisfaction, security, task-centered and people-centered orientations. Within these spheres are 12 separate styles (humanistic-encouraging, affiliative, approval, conventional, dependent, avoidance, oppositional, power, competitive, perfectionist, achievement, and self-actualizing) which are subsequently grouped into three specific patterns: constructive (reflect self-enhancing thinking and behavior that contribute to one's level of satisfaction, ability to develop healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks), Passive/defensive(represent self-protecting thinking and behavior that promote the fulfillment of security needs through interaction with people), and Aggressive/defensive(describe self-promoting thinking and behavior used to maintain status/position and fulfill security needs through task-related activities) (Human Synergistics International, 1987-2007.)…

My “primary” personal thinking style as shown in my circumplex is The Humanistic-Encouraging Style. This style means that I am “accepting of myself, and accept others for who they are without question or criticism” (Human 2010). Humanistic-Encouraging individuals believe they can “assist others in fulfilling their potential by providing a supportive climate that inspires self-improvement” (Human 2010). I believe that this very accurate summation of myself. This can easily be seen at my previous job as a waiter. I was often asked to train new employees because I was considered sensitive to people 's needs, and was willing to devote energy to counseling and coaching others. I also consider this style accurate about my myself because during my time as a Kohls retail shift manager, I tried to inspire my coworkers to think, grow and take responsibility for themselves by demonstrating belief in what my coworkers could accomplish. I always tried to believe when a subordinate told me that they could accomplish setting up a display in a certain amount of hours. My “backup” personal thinking style is The Competitive Style. I believe my backup style of being competitive is what pushes me to be all I can be. Competition is my motivation to succeed. I think I have developed this style by the environment I grew up in. As a child, my friends and I had races to see who could run the fastest, hop scotch competitions, and contests for the best cheerleading routines. Sports also played a major part in my competitiveness. I was motivated to do my very best in everything I did and winning a game always got you a trophy and/or a pizza party afterwards. In the workforce, competition is also used. At my previous job, prizes were given for the individual that took the most phone calls, received the lowest average handle time, etc. The benefits of my healthy competition in the workplace help me produce greater results and better quality of work. I…

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…
