The word lunatic can mean extremely foolish. Sometimes a lunatic can’t control their feelings or action. The author also uses the phrase “one look” to show how long Juli looked at Bryce, before deciding to like him. The phrase “one look” often means a very short amount of time or a second. She decided to like Bryce in a matter of a second after meeting him. In a matter of a second, Juli can’t know what Bryce’s personality is like, so she must of only looked at Bryce’s physical features, before deciding to like him. Van Draanen intentionally puts this scene in the book to show the extent of how crazy in love Juli is with Bryce after just one look. After throwing away Juli’s eggs, making fun of her uncle, and not helping when a sycamore tree Juli loved was being cut down, Bryce plants a tree in her yard to show he understands her, and that he has changed. Watching Bryce plant the tree, Juli finds out that she never really knew Bryce, and that she is willing to give him a chance. Juli thinks,“Maybe my mother’s right. Maybe there is more to Bryce Loski than I know. Maybe it’s time to meet him in the proper light” (p. 212). Here Van Draanen uses the phrase “proper light” to show that Juli is willing to see Bryce in a new way. The word proper can mean real and correct. This shows that Juli is willing to look at Bryce in a correct way. She is willing to see Bryce for who he really is, and not what he looks like. Van Draanen intention for this scene in this novel is to show that Juli has fully changed from a girl who is only interested in the physicals looks of others to one who is willing to see people’s true
