A Good Father In August Wilson's Fences
A good father is one who puts the interests of his child before his own and wants the child to be more successful than he was. I developed this definition through personal experience with my father, as these are the attributes I wish he had. With this form of faith and support, I would have considered him a good father. In August Wilson’s Fences, Troy’s relationship with his son Cory is of a convoluted and protective nature, with neither of them knowing how to properly express their love to each other and in turn causing strife. The decisions that Troy makes on Cory’s behalf define their relationship throughout the play. When Troy and his wife Rose are discussing Cory’s possible football opportunity, Troy explains, “I don’t want him to be

He was “looking for a guy with strong values and a strong personality”. Troy keeps distance between him and his family. Cory: "Tell Mama I'll be back for my things. "Troy: "They'll be on the other side of that fence."(p.89) The fence is a barrier between him and his son. I think this doesn’t show good character, he should just get along with his son. He should know that Cory is not going to be a perfect child. This doesn’t relate to baseball all that much, but I do think it would affect him in a negative way. Troy takes a huge football opportunity away from Cory. I don’t think that is the right thing to do. He should let his son do the sports that he wants and let him be happy. In the book, Cory asks Troy why he doesn't like him. Troy get’s really angry, saying that “ It’s my job. It’s my responsibility! Not ‘cause I like you!(p.38). think it shows a negative side of…

August Wilson’s famous play “Fences” is a drama set in the 1950’s. Being a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for the best play of the year, this play has had many positive responses to blacks and whites in this society. It is about protagonist Troy Maxson as well as his african american family that is filled with drama and excitement. In Wilson’s Fences by Joseph Wessling he expresses, “Fences is about the always imperfect quest for true manhood. Troy’s father was less of a “true” man than Troy, but he was a hard worker and a provider. Troy, even as a runaway, carried with him his father’s virtues along with a considerable lessening of the father’s harshness and promiscuity”(5). In this essay you will learn about the characters, the author’s background, the meaning of the play’s title, Fences, and the conflicts between the relationships in the family and life.…

His actions do not change throughout the course of the play. He remains controlling and bitter. He was being selfish when he went to Cory’s school and told his coach he can’t play football no more just because he didn’t have a chance when he was playing baseball. There are many elements that reveal changes in Troy, such as, him and Bono use to be so close. Bono use to come to Troy’s house and see him every day until the day they really sat down and talked about Troy’s affair with Alberta. Bono loved Rose and Troy and he didn’t want Rose to get hurt by Troy’s actions. I know what Rose means to you Troy; I’m just trying to say I don’t want to see you mess up (Fences 1065). He reminded Troy of how much he loved his wife and basically telling him he need to end the affair with Alberta before Troy breaks up their…

Fences by August Wilson is a dramatic and powerful play about Troy Maxson, a hard, gruff man, who has had to learn to survive in a world he does not understand. Growing up, Troy had an awful example of a father. He ran away from home at the age of fourteen, and had to find a way to live even though he had nothing. Now a father himself, Troy finds himself becoming as angry and hard as his father, although he has only ever tried to be a responsible man. Lyons, Troy’s oldest son from his first marriage, is the opposite of Troy. A struggling musician, Lyons’ fatherless childhood condemned him to be an irresponsible dreamer who believes in a future of liberation.…

The character I chose to render a costume design for is Troy Maxson from the play Fences by August Wilson. Troy is the family’s main source of income and his character is a very strong willed and stubborn 53-year-old man. Troy relentlessly told his son, Cory, multiple times that his football recruitment was a waste of time and that he should get “…recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living” (8; ch.1, sec.1). Therefore, from Troy’s actions, I knew that his costume should entail a sense of seriousness such as nothing brightly colored or crazy patterned clothing. Another area in the script that influences my costume choices was the setting of the play. The play was set on a dirty entrance of an old brick building house…

Parenting is a big part of every ones lives; it makes up who you are as a person and in many cases projects who you will be in the future. Some adults have trouble manipulating their children and teaching them what is right from wrong, while others have a much easier time doing so. In my opinion there is no such thing as “the perfect parent”, both the mother and the father have their flaws, but what matters is that the parent is always there for personal support. To me a good parent is someone who is always there to support there children in both good and bad terms, and a responsible adult that can supply for their kids necessities, not necessarily all the luxuries that they want. Another key point to being a good parent is to be a good leader, all kids look up to their parents and most of the time follow their parents footsteps and part of being a good leader is being a hard worker. A parent that is supportive, responsible, and a leader and hard worker all make up to be a great parent in my opinion. In the stories Scar by Amy Tan, My Fathers Hands by Daisy Hernandez, and the poems Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, No Longer a Teenager by Gerald Locklin all tie up to the universal theme of good parenting. Even though some characters in the story struggle to be the perfect parent they desire to be, some are successful in doing so while others just cannot do their duty.…

To be honest, my father is not an ideal dad because he can be defined as a workaholic without doubt. Since I had a memory he has been operating like a machine for days and nights. As a famous teacher and the boss of an training institute, his schedule is filled up with lectures to give and decisions to made on management. It was he who left me weeping alone behind a locked door when I was 5 years old, who never showed up in parents meetings, and who never took me to fly a kite or play basketball. It is forever regret that I missed so much experience for children and I therefore see him as a untypical father although I am reluctant to affix the label of incompetence to him. In adolescent years I could not help yelling at him and rarely followed his words on anything. When I got matured, I still find it tough to communicate with him, for neither of us could find enough words and topics to say.…
