It all started in Rutland, Vermont, on February 7, 1804 when John Deere was born. When John was only 4 years old in 1808 his father left for England and disappeared. One of the first moves Charles made for the company was create stock and shareholders. At first the company had four shareholders and the six more within the next year. At the end of 1868 Charles and John had many shareholders and controlled sixty five percent of the company. (Deer.com) Next Charles partnered with Alvah Mansur and they created the first Deere and Mansur branch house, a distributor of Deere products.
Things ran smoothly until 1876 when great debts caused the company to make wage cuts. These cuts caused the workers to go on strike, but it didn’t last long and they went back to work on the companies terms. In the same year the leaping deer trademark that we see in the John Deere logo today was registered. John Deere is one of the top farming equipment manufacturers and helps lots of farmers today. Without the creative mind of John Deere farming equipment may have been delayed many years. The steel plow almost double production speed and the horse pulled plow made it even faster and less tiring for farmers. Today we might be using the farm equipment of ten years ago without John Deere. Many farmers owe a lot to John Deere. Almost every farmer in America is using at least on of John Deere’s products. Some of the most popular products the company is producing now are tractors, combines, and the good old steel chisel plow. In 2011 Fortune magazine listed John Deere as one of the fifty most admired companies and was listed as one of the top one hundred brands in the world. In 2012 John Deere celebrated its 175th anniversary. (Deere.com) In this year sales hit the roof, with the company pulling in a net of 36.2 billion in income and revenue.
