A. June Who Choose The Waffle Iron Then
For the problem 14 the correct answer is “A. June, who chose the waffle iron instead.” (Aronson 9ed Chapter 6 Study Guide) I found my answer on page 164. The topic is Distorting Our Likes and Dislikes. The appropriate definition is post decision dissonance which is “dissonance aroused after making a decision, typically reduced by enhancing the attractiveness of the chosen alternative and devaluating the rejected alternatives.” (Aronson, E., Wilson, T. and Akert, S. Sommers, 2013) The research was conducted by Jack Brehm (1956). In the textbook the experiment is describes as the following. First, Brehm “asked women to rate the attractiveness and desirability of several small appliances.” Then he let the women choose one of the appliances as a “gift”. He then took the two “equally attractive” appliances and asked women to “rerate” them. There were two results. First, the chosen appliance was rated “somewhat higher.” Second, the appliance that was not chosen was rated “drastically lower.” The authors concluded that “the women reduced dissonance to feel better about the choice they had made.” (Aronson, E., Wilson, T. and Akert, S. Sommers, 2013) …show more content…

This decreased the value of the other choice, which means it reduced dissonance. In the time she spent making the decision and analyzing which appliance would be better, she ended up devaluing the toaster more than she had originally. Suddenly, the toaster’s faults increased because now since she knew she would have to take one, she did not want to regret her decision and found ways to increase the likeness of the waffle iron, which in turn led to looking for ways to drastically decrease the likeness of the
