The son was able to trust his father final after year of the father not being able to completely prove himself. The son trusts him after understanding how much his father is determined to have him home. The son knows that he’ll probably never see his father again so he enjoys the time they do have(Tobias Wolff, paragraph 33). The son accepting his father could be him releasing some stress from the divorce(Amy Desai, J.D.,The scope of this last finding…).
In the final paragraph, the son is comparing them driving in the snow to riding downhill or in a speedboat. The son seems to use these descriptions as a metaphor for being free and living on a whim. The son talks about his father being a great driver. “Such subtlety at the wheel, such tactful pedalwork.” The son seem to let go and become carefree like a child should.
